JAPAN, July 12 (ZoomSoccer) - Domestic broadcast rights for the 2002 World Cup to be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea are expected to reach a record 17 billion yen (100 Japanese Yen = 0.9335 US Dollar), nearly 30 times higher than the amount paid for the last World Cup´s TV rights.

The figure, to be footed by Japanese terrestrial networks and digital satellite broadcaster SkyPerfecTV, will be the highest in Japan's history, far exceeding the 600 million yen that Japanese networks paid for the 1998 World Cup in France.

While Japanese viewers will be able to watch games involving Japan as well as the championship for free on terrestrial channels, about one-third of the matches will only be available live on a subscriber basis, according to sources.

The South Korea/Japan - deal sucks anyway - I do not want to get up at three o´clock in the morning to attend a WC match.
