Liverpool said it signed winger Bernard Diomede from France's Auxerre for 3 million pounds ($4.5 million).

Diomede, a member of France's 1998 World Cup-winning squad, signed a three-year contract after passing a medical. He is manager Gerard Houllier's fourth signing before the new season starts in August after defender Markus Babbel, midfielder Gary McAllister and goalkeeper Pegguy Arphexad.

Diomede, 26, can play on the left wing or as a striker. He scored 30 goals for Auxerre after making his first-team debut in 1992 against Nimes, and was part of the Auxerre team that won the French league and cup double in 1996.

``I could have gone to other clubs and earned more money,'' Diomede said. ``My priority is to get back into the national team, and playing for Liverpool will help me.''

He's played eight times for France, last featuring against Saudi Arabia, Denmark and Paraguay at the 1998 World Cup, and was linked with a move to Monaco and Newcastle at the end of the 1998- 1999 season.
