Future President of Gama proposes changes as Liga Nacional hits problems

Wágner Marques, who will take over as president of Gama in the middle of June, has said that it's time for the CBF to stop trying to exclude the club from Brasilia and try to organise a league with 21 teams. Under Marques' proposal none of the clubs that make part of the first division will be excluded from the tournament.

"Gama don't want to fight with anyone. We have nothing against anyone whoever they be. What we sought to defend until now was that which we won and which has been denied us, nothing more than that. If the CBF allows Botafogo, that have nothing to do with this controversy, all right. We have nothing against Botafogo. And if they want to put in others, all right. What Gama wishes is to see maintained what we won on the pitch. The problem of the other clubs is not our business, but that of the CBF", said Marques.

The controversial new Liga Nacional is running into yet more problems, with Vasco and Flamengo's insistence on not having relegation for the bigger clubs dividing the Clube dos 13. The Paulista teams, and with the support of Grêmio and Inter, think the proposal that the founding members' teams can not be relegated is too elitist.

The league to cheat Justice

To keep Botafogo in the first division, the ³13 Club² develops a league alredy marked by a lack of transparency.

Opinion by CASSIANO RICARDO GOBBET.

It should be good news - but it¹s not. The Clube dos 13 (³13 Club²), an entity formed by the biggest clubs in Brazil, have decided to create a Brazilian League to manage the Brazilian Championship. The measure should have been taken to improve the quality of the game, but is in fact being done exclusively for political reasons. The main task of the move is bring back to the Série A three traditional clubs, Bahia, Botafogo and Flamengo, who are all currently in the second division.

Once again, the initiative for such a deplorable move was taken by Vasco da Gama¹s boss Eurico Miranda. Eurico promised last year that ³Botafogo would play in the first division in 2000, and Gama wouldn¹t². Gama won the right to play in the Série A on the pitch and in the courts, but this way Botafogo would have to be relegated. With the creation of the new league not even a legal warrant was enough to keep Gama in the first division. Eurico Miranda proved once again to be stronger than anyone in the corrupt world of Brazilian football.

The next steps are being awaited by everyone in Brazil. Gama will probably try to assure its rights in the courts, but it¹s difficult to compete with somebody who doesn¹t respect the rules. And that's certainly the case of Eurico Miranda (³...rules were made to be broken...² is one of his most significant phrases).

The whole episode is absolutely shaming for Brazilian football. At the same time as Brazil tries to fix its worst organization problems, getting partnerships to make the teams stronger, the directors of the football in the country show that they won¹t leave the benefits they get from football. Brazil is still far from having football suitable to its technical aptitudes.
