Had to create this thread to vent.

What in the world is going on here?! Three goals in eight minutes?! Siqueira taking a penalty from Mandzukic and missing it?! How does that happen?! How does Mandzukic let himself get called off there and how does Siqueira proceed to hit such a pathetic penalty?!

Also not crazy about Mandzukic. Seems like a big, slow, useless lug. Reminds me of Giroud at Arsenal.

Griezmann doesn't suit Atleti's system, especially playing in the role that Raul Garcia usually occupies as an AM/SS. I think he'd have a lot more success playing on the wings and interchanging flanks at least but they already have two quality players in Koke and Turan who do that.

Early season syndrome and also issues in finding the right fit as of yet with all the new players, Simeone still obviously some way off of creating a winning formula up to now and that's normal. That coupled with the fact that the team is obviously fatigued after playing 7 tough games in just 3 weeks, it was always going to be difficult to win at a fresh, in-form Valencia at Mestalla but that was simply an atrocious start which did you no justice whatsoever.

Mes, you think Valencia can finish 2nd this season?

You watched both games live? (Dortmund and Valencia?).

You might have a point when it comes to Griezmann. A possible solution would be playing Arda behind the striker as AM, which is actually his natural position, and Griezmann on the left wing.

I watched over half of both games, more than enough to comment on what I saw.

2nd is still a stretch this early in the campaign, but obviously they've made a fantastic start and can possibly grow from here when the likes of Pereira (surely he will at some point) and Negredo return to the fold. We'll see. They're more than good enough for a top 4 spot though, especially looking at the other contenders.

Another option could be Turan and Griezmann playing on the flanks and interchanging positions with Garcia playing off of Mandzukic, Koke playing more in midfield which I still believe is his long term position.

There's plenty of options and variety with the players at your disposal, as I said Cholo still needs time to find the right balance and get the new ones used to your system. The early season problems are nothing extraordinary, there's been a lot of positives to take from them too although this game wasn't exactly a bright spot, especially the early stages.

Atlético's problem today was concentration. Miranda is on fault for all three goals with his individual errors and you simply can't give away goals in this fashion if you want to get something from the game. Valencia took all three opportunities and I personally think Moyà could've done a lot better on the second goal even if it's a 1-on-1. Also has to be a lot clearer in the communication with Miranda on the opening goal.

The team actually played well for large periods during the game today, unfortunately people won't see that because of the result. Valencia weren't superior in terms of intensity by any stretch of the imagination, apart from the six minutes where Atlético made three individual mistakes which cost the team. Both teams were pretty equal in this deparment through out the game but they caught Atleti sleeping for six minutes and that was the big difference. Griezmann was one of Atlético's best players alongside Arda, Koke and Tiago today. Simeone obviously tried to change things and the team lost it's combination play. It was either taking away the combination play or taking off Mandžukić who had scored and who Simeone also took away the penalty from and gave it to Siqueira. Siqueira btw have missed two penalties in his whole career, both for Atleti.

I personally think Simeone made a mistake taking off Griezmann, Arda and Tiago, three of our four best players on the day, to replace them with players with different characteristics. I don't think it was too late to react even after the 70th minute had these three been on the pitch. The team was rather lacking overlapping runs from Jesús Gámez on the right, runs in behind Valencia's defence from Mandžukić (who has to start working on that part of his game) and perhaps individual ability to beat your own man 1-on-1. We only got one of these things today: Cerci, who himself got sent off.

I've said it before: there'll be flaws on the level of consistency during the first part of the season as long as the new players don't settle into Atlético's system of play. This felt like the Osasuna-loss (3-0) last year and I had a feeling it'd happen before the game. This time though, the team played a lot better, a lot longer.

It is what it is though. Valencia won and football is about winning. Just a shame the guys threw it away like this.

Griezmann is doing well almost every time he goes out on the pitch, the issue is rather that he has to have someone who can run for him as well in order to get the best out of him because that's when the opposing defence will be asked a lot more questions. Mandžukić isn't doing that.
