Primeira Liga 2014/2015

Jornada 9

Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques, Guimarães, 01.11.2013, 19:00 CET
Ref: Hugo Miguel (AF Lisboa)

vs

Vitória de Guimarães 3-0 SPORTING CP

This is probably the toughest away match in our league outside the games against our two traditional rivals to the title. Vitória is playing some very good football this year thanks to the stability and also the competence of their coach Rui Vitória and their continuous bet on a mixture of local and foreign young talent, in a very similar way to what happens at Sporting.

We have for the first time this season the entire squad available and we are also playing increasingly better so all is set for a great match.

Marco Silva called the following 19 players:

Goalkeepers:
1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders:
41 Cédric, 3 Maurício, 26 Paulo Oliveira, 34 Naby Sarr, 33 Jonathan Silva and 13 Miguel Lopes.

Midfielders:
23 Adrien, 14 William Carvalho, 17 João Mário, 24 Uri Rosell and 8 André Martins.

Forwards and Wingers:
77 Nani, 11 Diego Capel, 18 Carrillo, 36 Carlos Mané, 9 Slimani and 10 Fredy Montero.

At 12' first sign of danger from Sporting with Nani's free-kick going wide for not that much.

At 15' 1-0 to Guimarães with a header by Bouba Saré after a quick corner. Our defense was not ready and Vitória took well advantage of it.

At 42' Guimarães makes 2-0 with João Afonso's header being confirmed on the goal line by Maurício. Vitória's player was offside but that rule only applies in other stadia, as we saw yesterday.

A really tough first half with Guimarães showing why they were at the start of this match one point ahead of us in the table and only two behind the 1st place. They play with a very high pressure, have a midfield full of good, fast and technically gifted players which have been giving loads of work to our midfield and defence.

I would say that we deserve to be down on the score board, not because Guimarães created that much danger - in fact they only created two goal chances and scored two goals - but simply because they played better than us. However they didn't play enough to be ahead by two goals and in fact they only scored one legal goal because their second was offside.

Sporting will have to play the double of what we showed in the first half if we want to at least get a point from this very tough ground.

Well, Marco Silva definitely wasn't happy with the first half. Two subs at HT:

Carrillo and João Mário subbed off.

Diego Capel and Slimani coming in.

Great save by Patrício after a counter from Hernâni. Sporting playing with two forwards and Guimarães dangerous on the break.

Ridiculous refereeing in Guimarães.

Vitória's Tómané is on the ground complaining from his head, the ref waves on and doesn't stop the game. Sporting keeps playing until Saré completely hacks Adrien with an aggression. The ref gives only a yellow to Saré and now Tómané is assisted.

Pathetic.

At 82' game over. Cédric makes a silly foul inside the box and André André, the MOM, makes the 3-0 from the spot. Deserved win for Guimarães.

A fair result as we were very much below what we showed so far in this season and Vitória showed why I really think they are the team currently playing the best football in our league.

Sporting was not able to challenge the obstacles that Vitória brought to our game, because we were too soft (on the contrary to what happened several times this season) and also because simply Guimarães was better than us.

It's our first defeat in the league and our heaviest this season but hopefully it will be used as an example on how not to play against tough opposition.
