Primeira Liga 2014/2015

Jornada 13

Estádio José Alvalade, 14.12.2014, 19:00 CET
Ref: Jorge Ferreira (AF Braga)
29,619 att.

vs

SPORTING CP 1-1 Moreirense
(Fredy Montero 90'+2'; Ramón Cardozo 35')

The last match of 2014 played in Alvalade will see us facing a team that conceded so far as many goals as we did in the league. A piece of stats that just confirms that our defence hasn't been as compact as it should but also that Moreirense defends well and will obviously go to Alvalade with only one thing in their minds: to keep a clean sheet.

Hopefully this will be a reason for Marco Silva to field Fredy Montero in the starting XI, as that makes us clearly a more unpredictable, and also a better team upfront.

Apart from Nani, Jefferson is the only absence, due to injury, but we'll see if he'll be the only regular starter not to be picked from start.

The line-up should be announced soon.

Marco Silva picks Miguel Lopes ahead of Cédric for the second league game in a row. Not sure if I agree with that one.

Good to see Montero starting.

At 5' great chance to Adrien after a corner but the ball is blocked by a defender and goes wide. The ref calls for a goal kick. :howler:

At 10' great curved ball by Carrillo that goes just a bit over the crossbar.

At 36' great counter led by Slimani but Carrillo misses an easy finish.

Slimani is fouled right outside Moreirense's box, the ref waves on and Moreirense creates danger in a counter that ends up in a corner. In the follow up of the corner...0-1 to Moreirense by Ramon Cardozo at 36'.

Sporting is not playing well and this goal is not exactly unexpected but it came from a ref mistake on the other end of the pitch.

Very poor first half from Sporting failing too many easy passes, creating very little danger upfront, more due to what seems to be a bad hangover from Wednesday's match than to any great performance from the opposition.

The presence of Montero is not making a difference this time because Adrien is not having a good game and neither are Slimani or the two full backs who definitely are not better than the two regulars that are absent from this game.

Probably we'll go back to the 4x3x3 with João Mário coming in but our bad performance is not so much due to the tactics but rather to an uninspired first half by most of our key players.

Good chance at 48' with Slimani assisting Adrien inside the box but the ball was too high for him.

The amount of wasted crosses by Jonathan in this game is really record breaking.

This was definitely our second worst game of the season after the one at Guimarães. That fact added to the timing of the equalizer almost makes this home draw bearable. I said almost because it doesn't. Drawing home for a club like Sporting is always negative and when we do it playing this way it's even worse.

We pressed Moreirense much more during the second half, as we should have done during the entire game, but we never looked capable of going past a well organised defense.

Our very poor percentage of goals coming from set ball situations is also something that really should be addressed by Marco Silva because these days that is a key factor to gain advantage against this type of teams.

It was a collectively uninspired performance with the team always looking uncapable of showing the good style of football that we've showed so many times before this same season. Maybe the unfair exit of the CL has something to do it, maybe the absence of this team's, and this league's, best player are factors that can explain this poor game but the truth is that this result makes what was already quite difficult, close to impossible.
