Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 5

Estádio José Alvalade, 21.09.2013, 21:15 CET
Ref: Carlos Xistra
31,516 att.

vs

SPORTING CP 1-1 Rio Ave

It's undeniable that there is a slight feeling of hunger for revenge towards tonight's opponents. The sad Sporting of last season was beaten three times in three matches against Rio Ave but this year the tune is very different. It's true that Rio Ave conceded so far exactly the same number of goals that we did, only two, but upfront things a very different.

The big crowd expected tonight in Alvalade should witness another good game from our side with very little or even no changes from the line-up that beat Olhanense last weekend.

Here's the list of players called by Leonardo Jardim:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck

Defenders: 41 Cédric, 3 Maurício, 4 Jefferson, 15 Eric Dier and 35 Rúben Semedo

Midfielders: 14 William Carvalho, 23 Adrien, 10 Gérson Magrão, 21 Rinaudo, 8 André Martins, 8 Vítor, 18 Carrillo, and 11 Diego Capel

Forwards: 28 Wilson Eduardo, 17 Fredy Montero, 9 Slimani and 36 Carlos Mané

Nice to see 19 year old Carlos Mané getting his first and very deserved call to the first team.

Jefferson sends Wilson on a long range pass in the left flank, Rio Ave's keeper has an incomplete save and from a very tight angle outside the box Wilson hits the target. 1-0 at 25'

Capel probably pulled a muscle and has to be subbed at 43'

André Carrillo replaces him.

Sporting controlling the game but Rio ave is battling very hard in midfield and trying to counter

Rio Ave is playing like its a CL final, they are trying their best to appease PDC.

A difficult first half with Sporting having trouble to start building our attacking game due to the good marking of Rio Ave's offensive players. In spite of this it were only ours the dangerous situations created and in the most dangerous of them all Wilson Eduardo was perfect.

The good thing is that I don't see Rio Ave managing to keep this rhythm for much longer which means that with a little bit more speed we'll be able to break them down again.

Not good to see Capel going out with what seems to be a muscular injury but maybe that will give some more chances to another winger to have some playing time in the coming matches.

Now Eric Dier almost offered Rio Ave a goal but fortunately they were too bad to hit the target

At 68' LJ makes the first sub:

Rinaudo IN for Wilson

We needed more action in the midfield.

1-1 to Rio Ave by Tarantini at 72' with a header a from a freekick. A normal result after what happened so far in this second half.

Xistra was too quite tonight...a blatant save with the left hand by a Rio Ave defender inside the box...waved on.

A very poor second half from Sporting, not because Rio Ave played better, but simply because we were never capable of building our offensive game like it happened so far in this season. There are different reasons for that, namely the soft game from our midfield trio, Capel's injury (Carrillo was in one of his bad days at the job) and a strange lack of more offensive options on the bench.

A good side would have probably beaten us tonight, fortunately that's not the case with Rio Ave, but on the other hand, with an honest ref maybe we would have won it - it's impossible that he didn't see that handball inside the box when the game was already 1-1.

This game and this score is a reality check for many of us sportinguistas. This team is filled with young players and that is always a two-edged sword. We never said that we were title challengers but it's also not a case to give up from our objectives.

Rio Avenue have a surprisingly decent record against Sporting overall and in recent seasons seem to have a bit of an indian sign over you.
I'd say that "overall" is a bit far fetched. They did beat us three times last season (twice in the league and once in the league cup) but last season we lost with just about anybody so it's hardly an example. We played them 20 times at home for the league, won 15, drew 4 and lost only once, precisely last season. I wouldn't say that's a bad record.

lol I'm not going back to the 40s or 50s or anything. Sorry to mislead you.

I meant more recently.

Since 2000 let's say.

Considering the prestige of one club over another their record against you isn't too shabby at all.

When thinking of the history of a tie I don't think it makes a difference if a game was played last season or 60 years ago. In any case as I've said, Rio Ave did well against us last season but just about anybody did it so it doesn't make them that special.
