Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 28

Estádio do Restelo, Lisboa, 19.04.2014, 20:15 CET
Ref: Cosme Machado (AF Braga)

vs

Belenenses 0-1 SPORTING CP

Leonardo Jardim said on the pre-match press conference that this was probably the most important match of the season for us and in fact he might be right. A win today gives us direct passport to next season's Champions League group stage, something dreamt by many of us sportinguistas before this season started but that after what happened last season almost looks like...a dream.

We will be missing Cédric after one more of the long list of soft yellows showed to our players by Vítor Pereira's gang of thieves this season. For his place it looks like Iván Piris is on pole position although Welder and Ricardo Esgaio were also called.

Belenenses are heaviiy involved in the relegation battle, stole points to Porto and would have done the same to Benfica if it wasn't for one more episode of the "Colinho Saga". This all means they will not be an easy prey but Sporting is aware of the importance of this game so I expect us to deliver the same kind of quality we've been showing in this last stretch of the season.

Leonardo Jardim this time called more than the usual 19. Here's the list:

Goalkeepers:
1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders:
2 Welder, 30 Iván Piris, 3 Maurício, 15 Eric Dier, 4 Jefferson and 5 Marcos Rojo.

Midfielders:
23 Adrien, 14 William Carvalho, 8 André Martins, 6 Vítor, 10 Gérson Magrão, 11 Diego Capel, 18 Carrillo and 47 Ricardo Esgaio.

Forwards:
9 Slimani, 17 Fredy Montero, 20 Héldon, 36 Carlos Mané and 7 Shikabala.

A not very well played first half with Sporting finding hard to use the flanks with enough speed to create danger and Belenenses filling the central area of the pitch and defending well. One only big goal chance in this first half with André Martins hitting the crossbar through a great volley. Sporting shot quite a lot but never with enough danger. Things need to change upfront if we want guarantee direct access to the CL today.

We did it! It was not a nice game but we played for the result and we got it. Sporting started better in the second half, reached the lead and, as usual, started too early to defend. Belenenses tried to react but they really don't have enough quality for it. The ref still tried to give them a little help by sending off our best defender but not even that was enough to beat us.

We are back in the Champions League and Porto can suck (fruit) balls. :finger:
