Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 22

Estádio do Bonfim, Setúbal, 09.03.2014, 18:00 CET
Ref: Vasco Santos (AF Porto)

vs

Vitória de Setúbal 2-2 SPORTING CP

This visit to Setúbal is marked by one more episode of the terrible soap opera that is our little futebolzinho: the saga of loaned players. There are plenty of examples of players loaned by our FCP and SLB that suddenly become ill just a few days, or sometimes even hours, before facing their mother clubs. The most recent case happened last week with Miguel Rosa of Belenenses. That case is even more amazing because the player no longer belongs to SLB...but that's the state in which things are in Portugal.

Today we will be facing a team whose main figure is one of our most promising young midfielder, João Mário, Wilson Eduardo's brother. Besides him we also have loaned Betinho so there are two SCP players that may well end up playing against...SCP. It's a ridiculous situation that could easily be solved if we would adopt the English rule that forbids on loan players to face the club with which they have a contract.

In any case, in spite of the fact that Setúbal is now a much better team under Couceiro than it was with José Mota, and also the fact that they have won all games played at home in 2014, this is a game that we must win.

Unfortunately n form Carlos Mané got a knock at the service of Portugal U21's and will not be available. To replace him in the list of players called for this game, LJ included for the first time the new January signing Ousmane Dramé, whom already gave good signs playing for our B team.

Red alert on the suspensions zone: Maurício and Heldon are one card away from suspension and the next opponents are...Porto.

Here's the list of players called by Leonardo Jardim:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: 41 Cédric, 3 Maurício, 5 Marcos Rojo, 15 Eric Dier, 4 Jefferson and 2 Welder.

Midfielders: 23 Adrien, 14 William Carvalho, 8 André Martins, 10 Gérson Magrão, 11 Diego Capel and 18 Carrillo.

Forwards: 28 Wilson Eduardo, 9 Slimani, 17 Fredy Montero, 20 Héldon and 93 Ousmane Dramé.

Our line-up is out and it comes with two surprises. Slimani keeps the place in the starting XI and Gérson Magrão replaces André Martins:

14 William Carvalho
23 Adrien - 10 Gérson Magrão
18 Carrillo - 9 Slimani -20 Heldon

Subs: 22 Marcelo Boeck, 15 Eric Dier, 8 André Martins, 11 Diego Capel, 28 Wilson Eduardo, 93 Ousmane Dramé and 17 Fredy Montero.

Adrien scores a clean goal and the ref calls an offside. Where have I seen this before?

Slimani with a superb header that Setúbal's keeper almost svaed but the ball crossed the goal line. It should be 2-0 but we are not supposed to complain.

A weird first half that started very balanced but gradually saw Vitória gaining slight control of the midfield, thanks to a great game by SCP loanee João Mário and also to the changes of personnel on our side. Sporting reacted and in the two times that we created danger we scored twice. The first goal was incredibly called off (Adrien was way on side when Slimani headed the ball) so it means that only Slimani's great header counted.

A very efficient Sporting but something needs to be changed in our attacking game because we can't live from a couple of goal chances in 45'.

i gave a quick look at the match, and was very pleased to see so many people watching it

its really nice to see the games back on sunday afternoon, for those who had any doubts, it shows how people will go to football matches when they are played at more appropriate times

Yes, I also love to see football being played in the afternoon instead of in the evening but to be fair this season Sporting had big crowds everywhere, no matter if at home or away and also no matter at what time and day of the week.

May I ask what are you doing watching Sporting when your club is playing at the same time? :shades:

What a chance with Slimani heading on a free header just a couple of metres from the goal.

The same linesman that robbed us of a clean goal gave an offside one to Setúbal, but yeah, we're not supposed to complain.

Great chance for Montero with a sweet lob over the keeper but the ball went just wide.

Now it's Capel with a great chance but the keeper saved well.
