vs

SPORTING CP 1-0 Olhanense

There is some expectation to see how will the team react on the pitch after Tuesday's pitiful performance against our oldest rivals. The ball is on the players' court and it's up to them to show that we are still alive.

Olhanense is probably the weakest side of our league. A patchwork of rejects and journeymen mixed with a couple of quality players and a 3rd level Italian coach that is also the 3rd person to sit on that chair this season. Nothing else than a big lorry sitting in front of ex-SCP and ex-Portugal NT keeper Ricardo is what we can expect from them tonight.

William Carvalho will be back and that's a guarantee that our midfield will again function. Remains to be seen if LJ goes back to the regular tactical drawing of this season (4x1x2x3) or if he keeps Montero and Slimani in the first XI.

Leonardo Jardim called 20 players for this game:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: 41 Cédric, 30 Iván Piris, 3 Maurício, 15 Eric Dier, 4 Jefferson and 5 Marcos Rojo.

Midfielders: 23 Adrien, 10 Gérson Magrão, 14 William Carvalho, 6 Vítor, 8 André Martins, 11 Diego Capel and 18 Carrillo.

Forwards: 28 Wilson Eduardo, 9 Slimani, 17 Fredy Montero, 20 Héldon and 36 Carlos Mané.

Line-up is out and LJ goes back to our regular tactical system. Jefferson is back from injury much sooner than expected, Heldon keeps his place in the first XI and Carlos Mané gets directly into it...

1 Rui Patrício
41 Cédric - 3 Maurício - 5 Marcos Rojo - 4 Jefferson
14 William Carvalho
8 André Martins - 23 Adrien
36 Carlos Mané - 17 Fredy Montero - 20 Héldon

Substitutes: 22 Marcelo Boeck, 15 Eric Dier, 6 Vítor, 28 Wilson Eduardo, 18 Carrillo, 11 Diego Capel and 9 Slimani.

Fantastic work by Fredy Momntero on the left passing through two defenders like a hot knife on butter and delivering a sweet pass for Mané's easy tap in

Montero makes it 2-0 and is wrongly called off for offside.

Great first half from Sporting giving the expected answer on the pitch to those that might have any doubts about the real value of this team. Total control over the game, two goals scored (only one counted because Montero's beautiful header was robbed by the linesman), created plenty of more chances. We showed a flowing and fast paced attacking game, mostly thanks to the great work of the two wingers, Carlos Mané and Heldon, and also Fredy Montero, the real boss upfront. Excellent return by William Carvalho as well, showing how much this team needs him.

We kept being on top in this second half even if playing more slowly, something expected as this squad is not used to play two games in the same week. It was a game that we should have won by 3 or 4, so many were the goal chances created, but our finishing wasn't the best.

Montero was excellent, dictating the play in our last third but he is clearly anxiously looking for goals and that is never a good thing for a player. Heldon and Carlos Mané were both good, mainly in the first half and Carrillo came in well in the game, on the contrary to Wilson Eduardo. Also a word for the good return to the team by William Carvalho and Jefferson.

A good win and one more blank sheet for Rui Patrício, this time on his 26th birthday.

3 points much needed,
next game will be away to Rio Ave... will be difficult they always give us a rough ride.

I really like the look of Heldon, he seems to be a good addition and we need more quality on the wings. he seems fast, with good touch on the ball and he also set up good chances for teammates.

Montero played very well, and he did in fact score but the Benfica official called of offside wrongly.
