Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 11

Estádio José Alvalade, 01.12.2013, 20:45 CET
Ref: Jorge Ferreira (AF Braga)

vs

SPORTING CP vs Paços de Ferreira

Sporting's Board, coach and players have repeatedly been bombarded by the press with questions on whether they see themselves as candidates to win the title. The answers have been the same from everyone: no. Jardim went further after last week's win in Guimarães and clarified that we aren't candidates because the squad was not designed for that. All of them are right but the truth is that reality is showing that we are. We are because Porto's form is dropping to its lowest shape in years and Benfica is not convincing anyone but some of their ever delusional fans. This game comes one day after Porto lost for the first this season at Académica which means that a win tonight will take us back to the first place in the table. I don't think in all honesty that that will be in the minds of our players when they enter the pitch tonight but it will in the minds of the fans.

It's not going to be a piece of cake because Paços clearly improved since Henrique Calisto took over from the terrible Costinha. They have not conceded a goal in their last 3 games, the last against Fiorentina for the EL. Knowing their new coach and having this in mind we should expect a big yellow bus parked in front of goal with a couple of wingers trying to grab some free kicks in our defensive half and hope for the best. To fight against this we will need to be fast and clinical.

The main changes on the list of players called are the return from suspension of Rojo and Wilson Eduardo. Most likely they will both get in the starting XI in spite of the good performances of their replacements last weekend, Eric Dier and Carrillo respectively.

Leonardo Jardim called the following 19 players for the game:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck

Defenders: 41 Cédric, 3 Maurício, 5 Marcos Rojo, 15 Eric Dier and 4 Jefferson

Midfielders: 14 William Carvalho, 23 Adrien, 8 André Martins, 10 Gérson Magrão, 21 Rinaudo, 6 Vítor, 11 Diego Capel and 18 Carrillo

Forwards: 28 Wilson Eduardo, 17 Fredy Montero, 9 Slimani and 36 Carlos Mané

Slimani needs to play, he is the bus killer

if we dont score early I believe we will have to wait until Slimani comes on again to score, the guy is just such a big presence in the area that teams really seem to struggle to cope with him when we swing balls into the area.

Slimani plays when Plan A doesn't work. There is no sense in playing him in the place of Montero so he just has to accept he is our super-sub and not more than that.

One more goal from a corner. :)

William Carvalho finishing with coolness after a header at the first post.

1-0 at 16' completely deserved.

If Montero wasn't such a killer forward he could easily be a superb number 10. Golden feet this guy has.

First 20' were only ours, Pacos tried to react winning 3 free kicks, two of them upon request to the ref but none was dangerous.

Montero steals the ball after a poor pass in the back but the keeper saved for a corner.

its heart-warming to see Pacos try their best, you can tell it is a case of true love between them and Porto...

The picture of the game in this first half was exactly as I expected it. Sporting with 2/3 of the ball possession controlling the game and Pacos only coming to defend and to eventually get their luck from the odd set piece. The first 20'-25' were only of Sporting with the team playing well and fast mainly through the right wing thanks to some great combinations between Cédric (one of our best so far), André Martins and Diego Capel.

We scored again from a corner, one more striking difference from what used to happen with us in the recent past, and created a few other chances. Paços tried to stop defending so deep and managed to get 3 free kicks close to our box (two of them from non-existing fouls) but even so incapable of creating any danger whatsoever. Sporting still had a couple more chances close to the end of this first half and seems to be in complete control.

Great ball won by Montero in the attack midfield launching Carrillo on the left, La Culebra goes to the line, crosses and Montero gets back to the score sheet making his 10th in the league and 13th in the season in 13 official matches.

Now Montero was too unselfish passing when he should have shot inside the box.

At 68' we have our first sub which is a forced one as Adrien had a weird fall and had to be subbed by Gérson Magrão
