After the good game Sporting played at Madeira on Wednesday, which gave us the right to be for the 26th time in the Portuguese Cup final, spirits are high amongst sportinguistas. The return of Rinaudo, but also of Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Izmailov, and the promising debut of Xandão, are also good reasons to make us more hopeful that at least we can go back to the level that we already showed this season, and with it reach some of the objectives that we still have in front of us.

The squad stayed in Madeira and the atmosphere in the trainings was great. Hundreds of Sporting fans from Madeira made their presence every day supporting the team.

Regarding the last game we will count again with Onyewu, back from suspension, but we will miss Diego Capel who got a knock on Wednesday. Schaars is also fit again but there are doubts whether he will make the first XI.

This may be the starting line-up chosen by Domingos for the game starting at 19:30 CET...

Rui Patrício
João Pereira - Onyewu - Xandão - Insúa
Rinaudo
Matías Fernández - Elias
Izmailov - van Wolfswinkel - Carrillo

Marítimo is having a great season and we have lost 2-3 against them in the reverse feature, even if in a game marked by some very dodgy refereeing decisions. We did beat them 3-0 for the Cup though so we have nothing to fear. If we play with the same intensity of last Wednesday I am confident we will get the needed 3 points.

João Pereira is in fact suspended for this game so let's see who will be on his place at RB.

Official line-up is out and there are a few surprises...

Rui Patrício
Santiago Arias - Onyewu - Xandão - Insúa
Rinaudo
Matías Fernández - Elias
Pereirinha - van Wolfswinkel - Carrillo

Domingos fields a totally new defensive back four with Pereirinha replacing JP and Xandão keeping the place in the starting XI whereas Onyewu returns replacing Polga. Izmailov doesn't get the nod to start and it will be Santiago Arias who will have his first start since he arrived at the club.

At 21' 1-0 to Marítimo by Benachour after a long range shot where Rui Patrício didn't look good. In the previous move he did a huge save from a direct freekick but this time he didn't look good. The lead is deserved because we are being constantly beat with our slow high defensive backline.

Pereirinha, as usual is an absolute zero. I can't understand Domingos option to have him on the squad much less in a starting XI.

First real attacking move from our side at 28' with a great shot by Arias well saved by Pecanha.

Marítimo 1-0 Sporting at HT

Terrible first half from our side. The team seems really tired with most of the players that had such a good performance just 3 days ago clearly showing signs that they should at least have had some 24 hours more to recover. Tactically there are also some dubious options from Domingos, although most of them are due to the absences due to injury. The two CBs are playing together for the first time and as they are the same type of player - very tall, good in the air but not made to run back after speedy forwards - they have been constantly caught by Marítimo's offensive line. In the midfield Pereirinha is null, Elias, Rinaudo and Matias seem knackered and Carrillo is never the same guy when he plays on the left.

We need to change a lot if we want to take something out of this game. Schaars and Izmailov should come in right after the break, as even if both are coming back from injuries they surely could bring something positive to the team. I wouldn't be surprised though if Domingos prefers to take off Pereirinha and bring on Evaldo advancing Insúa to the left flank.

Santiago Arias has been our best player tonight. A big improvement from João Pereira, as I expected.

At 60' 2-0 by Danilo Dias taking advantage of the slow game of our CBs. A goal coming against the flow of play as we were better than them in this second half, even if we haven't manage to create any danger so far.

We are looking much better now. Too bad it seems too late to get anything from this game.

I agree with this. Looks to be a very promising player, alot more well rounded and consistent than JP.

Maritimo playing a fantastic tactical game, though. Must admit it.

Marítimo 2-0 Sporting - FT

We played better in the second half with Schaars and Izmailov bringing new blood to the midfield and Matías taking control of most of what he did good upfront. Still, our pair of CBs today was definitely not at the level of a club like ours and the very few times that Marítimo went ahead in this second half showed some slapstick moments difficult to understand in a club that is expected to roll over teams like the one we faced tonight.

It's difficult to see how we will reach the 3rd place, unless either Braga or Porto have a complete breakdown in what's left of this league. I understand Domingos when he says that after the revolution that happened in the summer it's not realistic to expect that everything starts working smoothly but there are clearly points in this squad that need to be dramatically improved if we want to achieve more than where we are right now.

One last positive word to Santiago Arias - a good debut of a player that I wish could have many more minutes than those that Domingos has given him so far.

The team was welcomed at the airport by whistles, insults, and verbal abuse.
