El Nacional The team has renovated dramatically, gone are Edison Mendez, Eduardo Hurtado, Carlos Gruesio and others. But a strong core of young players still and with the addition of a few newcomers, they expect to have a typical decent Libertadores presentation.

Jorge Guagua Strong defender, captain of the Ecuador U23
David Quiroz Defensive midfielder of Ecuador U23
Luis Checa Left back of Ecuador U23

Nacional The traditional tricolores have a very young team this time around, but have kept a few veterans to soldier them on to another Libertadores title run.
Fabian Coehlo Excellent midfielder
Gustavo Mendez Veteran right back and leader of the team
Luis Romero Ex Peñarol goalscorer
Oscar Moralwes hard working midfielder

Independiente 4 -Cienciano 2

Independiente came out with everything they got and played with their hearts. The game was in favor of Independiente and then La Rosa got himself ejected. Cienciano was down to 10 men and that was all she wrote.

Independiente started well but Cienciano showed strong character to keep fighting.

El Nacional 0 - Nacional 0

The ecuadorians attacked all game but all their attacks crashed the wall that was Viera the charrua keeper. Nacional was tremendous defensively while El Nacional was erratic on attack.

Seven-times South American champions Independiente made their Libertadores Cup return after a seven-year absence with a 4-2 home win over 10-man Cienciano of Peru in Group Five on Thursday.

Cienciano, surprise winners of the less prestigious Copa Sudamericana in December, had midfielder Juan Carlos La Rosa sent off in the 41st minute for a second bookable offence when they were one goal down in Buenos Aires.

Midfielder Christian Gimenez put the Argentine side ahead in the 16th minute and striker Leonel Rios increased their lead just before the interval when he slotted home a cross from man-of-the-match Damian Manso.

Midfielder Hernan Losada added two second-half goals but Cienciano grabbed consolations through Santiago Acasiete and Rodrigo Saraz. Independiente's 15-year-old substitute Sergio Aguero made his Libertadores Cup debut.

Two players were sent off, one from each team, in the 35th minute of another Group Five match at 2,800 metres altitude in Quito, where three-times champions Nacional of Uruguay held out for a 0-0 draw with El Nacional of Ecuador.

The home team's Luis Valencia and Oscar Morales of Nacional were dismissed for fighting.

Nacional and Independiente are two of the most succesful teams in Libertdares Cup history. Between them they have won this tournament 10 times.

Nacional is expecting a tough game and will put a team that will have emphasis on the midfield. Only one striker in the starting 11.

Independiente is playing superbly, very talented offensively. They have started very well in Libertadores and Argie championship.. They will miss Colombian forward jairo Castillo still suspended from last tournament's suspension.

Cienciano vs Nacional

Game: 02/26/04 - Lima - 09:30PM local time

CIENCIANO: Oscar Ibáñez, Carlos Lugo, Santiago Acasiete, Giuliano Portilla, Alessandro Morán, Carlos Bazalar, César Ccahuantico, Julio García, Alfredo Carmona, Germán Carty y Rodrigo Saraz.

El NACIONAL: Geovanny Ibarra, Omar de Jesús, Jorge Guagua, Bolívar Gómez, Luis Checa, David Quiroz, Santiago Morales, Luis Valencia, Nicolás Ascencio, Angel Fernández y Evelio Ordóñez.

Cienciano will try to forget about the hammering they got in BAs. El Nacional also is trying to improve on their debut where they could not win at home.

Final

Cienciano 1 - El Nacional 0

Very mediocre game. El Nacional was very defensive and did not really attack until after Cienciano score their goal.

Uruguay's Nacional reach Libertadores second round

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 20 (Reuters) - Nacional reached the second round of the South American Libertadores Cup by beating El Nacional 3-2 on Tuesday while Independiente will play-off for a place after losing by the same score at Cienciano.

Two goals from Alexander Medina, the second a penalty, and one from Luis Romero helped Uruguay's Nacional finish top of Group five with 12 points after their win in Montevideo.

Felix Borja and Luis Checa replied for the Ecuadorean army club.
Independiente, who have won a record seven titles, finished second with eight points despite losing to their Peruvian opponents, who had already been eliminated.

Independiente's total means they will finish as one of the worst four second-placed teams in the nine groups and will have to play-off.

The Red Devils twice came from behind to level at 2-2 before a late penalty by Paraguayan Carlos Lugo gave Cienciano a consolation win in the Andean city of Arequipa.
