Libertadores Semifinals: Boca Juniors vs America de Cali

Two teams that have gotten this far with team discipline and tactic rather than with espectacular play. Both are very even talent wise and both will be missing key players especially in the first leg.

Goalkeeping
Roberto Abondancieri - Boca
Robinson Zapata - America
Two very good keepers who have been key performers for their teams. Zapata is a little more athletic and as a plus can score from the PK spot, which can be useful in the shootout. Edge America.

Defense
Hugo Ibarra, Rolando Schiavi, Nicolás Burdisso, Clemente Rodríguez - Boca
John Cano, John Tierradentro, Luis Aspirilla and Killian Illiescas - America
America will be missing two starters (Aspirilla and Illiescas) because of suspensions in the first leg which could prove decisive. Boca is getting Burdisso from injury and is moving Clemente Rodriguez to the left side to cover the hole left by the absence of Crossa.
Edge Boca.

Midfield
Alfredo Cascini, Sebastián Battaglia, Diego Cagna, Carlos Tevez - Boca
Rubén Bustos, Fabián Vargas, Carlos Angulo, David Ferreira - America
Bianchi is having to shuffle it's midfield a bit because Tevez will move up front in the first leg. Equi Gonzalez will come in after a two month absence in the Libertadores. America also has to replace Banguero with Angulo defensively there isn't that much difference between them but Banguero will be missed on set pieces in the air. Edge Even

Forwards
Marcelo Delgado and Guillermo Barros Scheloto - Boca
Jairo Castillo and Julian Vasquez (Leonardo Moreno) - America
Delgado and Barros Scheloto are very good playing together and el mellizo was on a tear before getting injured forcing him to miss the first leg. On the other hand Julian Vasquez is second top scorer in the Libertadores and Castillo has been improving tremendously.
Edge: Even.

Boca Juniors vs America de Cali at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 06/11/03 - 8:10 PM (local time)

Boca will miss top scorer Barros Scheloto and left back Crossa. Because of this Bianchi has been forced to move his players around a bit. Tevez will move up front to pair up with Delgado while Equi Gonzalez comes fill in the middle. Clemente Rodriguez moves to the left from right spot and in comes teenage Pablo Jerez or European returnee Hugo Ibarra.

America also has to put in some subs. Coach Castro will be on the stands for this one since he is also suspended. Also through suspensions are defener Aspirilla and dangerous left back Illiescas, Navarro and Gonzalez come in fro them respectively. In the middle banged up Banguero is lost for the semis, in comes capable replacement Angulo.

Possible line ups:

BOCA: Roberto Abondanzzieri, Pablo Jerez (Hugo Ibarra), Rolando Schiavi, Nicolás Burdisso, Clemente Rodríguez, Alfredo Cascini, Sebastián Battaglia, Diego Cagna, Ezequiel González, Carlos Tévez y Marcelo Delgado

Coach: Carlos Bianchi

AMERICA: Robinson Zapata, John Cano, John Tierradentro, Pablo Navarro, Andrés González, Rubén Bustos, Fabián Vargas, Carlos Angulo, David Ferreira, Jairo Castillo y Julián Vásquez.

Coach: Fernando Castro

Three-off as Boca beat America 2-0 in Libertadores semi

By Javier Leira

BUENOS AIRES, June 11 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors opened up a 2-0 advantage on Wednesday in the first leg of their Libertadores Cup semi-final against America, who finished with nine men for the second match running in the competition.

Boca, who also had a player sent off, took advantage of their numerical advantage to score a potentially decisive goal in the 89th minute through 19-year-old Carlos Tevez after Rolando Schiavi had opened the scoring shortly before halftime.

America, who had two players and coach Fernando Castro dismissed in their 4-1 win over Argentina's River Plate in their quarter-final second leg, this time had Jairo Castillo and Ruben Bustos shown the red card.

Castillo and Boca right-back Hugo Ibarra were dismissed for fighting in the 82nd minute after Ibarra hacked down the Colombian striker, who retaliated by kicking Ibarra in the chest with both feet as he fell.

The incident led to a brawl between the teams which held up play for five minutes, similar to one during America's tie against River which started after Castro kicked the ball away and pulled an opponent's hair.

Bustos was given his marching orders for four minutes later in what seemed to be either a case of mistaken identity or dissent. He was sent off after a foul on Tevez by his team mate Pablo Navarro.

FIREWORK FOG

Four-times former champions Boca, Argentina's most popular club dominated the match against the Colombians, who appeared intimidated by the unique atmosphere of the Bombonera stadium where they were backed by a 55,000 crowd.

The pitch had to be cleared of paper thrown from the terraces before play could start and most of the second half was played in a fog caused by fireworks let off by fans behind the Boca goal.

Boca, despite missing key striker Guillermo Barros Schelotto, had two good chances in the first ten minutes but had to wait until to the 41st minute to open the scoring.

Marcelo Delgado crossed from the left and Schiavi, who had gone up to join the attack, rose unmarked in a crowded penalty to head into the corner of the goal.

America, who have reached four Libertadores finals and lost them all, had an amazing second-half escape when a point-blank shot bounded off a defender who was standing on the line and appeared to be heading for Cali with only a one-goal deficit until Tevez struck.

Receiving his back to goal with three defenders around him, Tevez turned, saw goalkeeper Robinson Zapata off his line and curled the ball into the net.

Perdón, voy a bostezar…

America de Cali vs Boca Juniors at Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali, Colombia. 06/19/03 - 8:10 PM (local time)

America will miss a few key players in Castillo, Bustos, Aspirilla and Banguero. They need to be able to score against a very tight defense. And be able to win by two goals against a team that hasn't lost by that many goals in the whole tournament.

Boca will miss Barros Scheloto. They will try to finish thissemifinal on the counter. They know that an early goal will probably do the trick.

Possible line ups:

América de Cali: Robinson Zapata; Pablo Navarro, John Freddy Tierradentro, Andrés Felipe González y Kilian Virviescas; Jorge Banguero, Carlos Fernando Angulo, Fabián Vargas y David Ferreira; Leonardo Fabio Moreno y Julián Vásquez.

Coach: Fernando Castro.

Boca Juniors: Roberto Abbondanzieri; Pablo Jerez, Rolando Schiavi, Nicolás Burdisso y Clemente Rodríguez; Javier Villarreal, Raúl Cascini, Diego Cagna y Sebastián Battaglia; Carlos Tévez y Marcelo Delgado.

Coach: Carlos Bianchi
Prediction: America 1 - Boca 1

What a terrible performance by America their worst game since their against Santos (1-5).

Boca is probably the most tactically sound team in the tournament. They are not overwhelming talent wise, but they have 3 or 4 very good players and the rest fill their spots superbly.

Final

America 0 - Boca 4

This final is really much more promising than Santos vs América de Cali. Let's hope we have two clean matches with no distribution of red cards.
