Who will go through to the next round?

This one is pretty even group. No clear favorite.

Velez didn't make it out of the first round last year. This time around they look even weaker. Plus the financial woes I see them falling short again. THIRD

Morelia is a pretty solid team with couple of players that can make a difference. I see them going through in SECOND.

Sporting Cristal is IMO the best Peruvian team but still it will be very difficult for them to go through. It will be close but by default they'll finish FOURTH

Nacional got to the second round last year eliminating San Lorenzo on its way there. I think they'll repeat their performance this year and top the group. FIRST

sporting has a very good chance of finishing in the top 2 in this group

it has played 2 friendlies so far this year
against penarol and millonarios

both ended up in draws

the 2 players up and coming players to watch are
midfielder renzo sheput and defender angel villalta

i think the order will be

nacional
sporting
velez
morelia

A tough one but I don't see Velez Sarsfield doing well at all. They have been underachieving in the domestic league for a while so I don't even see them going trough. My call goes for Nacional with mexicans and peruvians fighting for the second place.

It pains me to say this, but Nacional is the has been the best Uruguayin team the last 2 years, and are the best chance for a Uruguayin team to do well in this tournament.

But to do well they will have to find a replacement for Sebastian Abreu who left to Cruz Azul earlier this year. He was such a dominating force, for Nacional, and I dont think any of the replacements Nacional has brought can do the job he did.

All hopes will rely on the creative play of Limber Guitierrez

Oh & Condor great to see u back buddy

They got Brazilian Flavio Barros to replace Abreu. he played for Barcelona de Guayaquil and was the second leading scorer in the league. But he is very inconsistent he would score i 3 or 4 games in a row then go 7 or 8 games without scoring. More frustrating is that he average about 4 CLEAR misses for evry goal he scores. :fero:

It is avery hard group, because Nacional is a traditional top team of Libertadores Cup, and Velez is always a interesting protagonist. But we can't put out Morelia. Mexican's team are fierce teams and very brave playing in home. Sporting..There are nothing to do here!

1.Nacional
2.Morelia
3.Velez
4.Sporting

Sporting and Nacional face off in Copa Libertadores

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Diego Aparicio
05 February 2002 (Teamtalk) -- Sporting Cristal of Peru are set to take on Uruguayan champions Nacional during their international debut on Wednesday.

The Peruvian giants will start their Copa Libertadores campaign playing in front of their home crowd in Lima.

Nacional, for their part, will look forward to reinvigorating the momentum of last Sunday in Montevideo during their local season opener.

The Uruguayans will field Uruguayan international Richard Morales in the front line. Morales is a tall, fast, and very effective striker and is also the man responsible for delivering Uruguay to the World Cup finals.

Morales also got off to a great start in league action, hitting two goals last Sunday in a 5-0 win over Central Español in the local league.

Nacional’s number one offensive weapon will be aided by Bolivian playmaker Limbert Gutierrez. The Bolivian international, in his second year wearing the Tricolor outfit, will orchestrate the Uruguayan club midfield alongside Charrúa international Gustavo Varela.

As for Sporting Cristal, Peruvian international Roberto Palacios will lead the playmaking scheme.

“The group is joyful and with lots of energy to start playing and to draw the Uruguayan faces, though this will be complicated because they [Nacional] have a good team and they’d like to reach [get] a point in Lima,” said the Sporting Cristal skipper.

Besides featuring Palacios, Sporting Cristal also fields other Peruvian national team members like goalkeeper Miguel Miranda, defender Percy Olivares and striker Flavio Maestri.

In the front line, Cristal will field Brazilian striker Julinho, who has wear the Celeste jersey since 1993 and was a member of the Copa Libertadores runner-ups in 1997.

Sporting Cristal and Nacional of Montevideo recently played a friendly match in Lima. They have been seeded in Group 5 and will meet later with Morelia of Mexico and Velez Sarsfield of Argentina.

Morelia 0 - Velez 0 Halftime

I am not sure if Morelia can waste more scoring opportunities than they did in the 1st half. It's starting to become ridiculous.

We'll see if Velez can survive the 2nd half.

Morelia, Velez Sarsfield open Libertadores with nil-nil draw

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Luis Bueno
6 February, 2002 (TEAMtalk) -- Morelia and Velez Sarsfield could not figure out the other's defense and the club split a pair of points with a 0-0 draw in the opening match of Group 5 of the Copa Libertadores.

Morelia failed to capitalize from the energetic crowd of 35,000 at Estadio Morelos in their first Libertadores match.

The Mexican side did control the match but strikers Alex Fernandes and Diego Galvan could not finish. Velez defenders were tested on several occasions but stood firm. Morelia's Hugo Chavez and Jose Antonio Noriega provided the strikers with numerous quality crosses that ultimately resulted in nothing.

Morelia's two best chances were stopped on the goal line. Fernandes fired a point-blank shot that Velez keeper Gaston Sessa stopped. And, when Sessa was not stopping Morelia's shots, the woodwork was working magic. Noriega smacked the crossbar in the first half after beating Sessa.

The match was a rough one as referee Felipe Russo handed out eight cautions, including five on Velez.

In the second half, Velez Sarsfield counterattacked more than they had in the opening 45 minutes but were not successful.

Morelia's next match will be on Feb. 21 against Nacional in Montevideo. Velez Sarsfield, meanwhile, will host Peruvian side Sporting Cristal on Feb. 26.

Teams

Morelia: Jose Maria Buljubasich; Hugo Chavez, Heriberto Morales, Dario Franco, Omar Trujillo; Jorge Francisco Almiron, Flavio Davino, Jose Antonio Noriega, Javier Lozano (Carlos Morales, 85); Diego Galvan (Alejandro Glaria, 65), Alex Fernandes.

Velez Sarsfield: Gaston Sessa; Sebastian Mendez, Fabricio Fuentes, Emiliano Dudar (Eduardo Dominguez, 46), Juan Carlos Falcon; Fabian Cubero, Martin Hidalgo, Leandro Gracian (Leandro Somoza, 30), Federico Dominguez; Patricio Camps (Roberto Nanni, 80), Dario Husain.

Sporting Cristal 1 - Nacional de Montevideo 2 Halftime

Sporting Cristal has had the best of the play and went ahead with a goal from Brazilian Julinho. A screw up by Peruvian NT Miranda allowed Richard Morales to tied up. A minute later Oscar Morales scored the second from long distance shot. As I said I hope this is not the begining of another Peruvian debacle.

Sporting Cristal 3 - Nacional de Montevideo 4 FINAL

Amazing game, first Cristal was wining 1 -0 then losing 1 - 4 and they almost cameback to tie it but ended up losing 3 - 4. Nacional ratifies that they are firm candidates to finish first in this group.
