America de Cali is my first choice...I know Atletico Paraenense is the current brazilian Champ, but America's travels in the years thru Libertadores has left a tremendous inpact on their image . They are by far the team with most of all the Libertadores Xperience in this group. (Bolivar has some credentials too)
Im going with Bolivar 2nd...A Paraenense and Olmedo fighting it for third spot.

The brazilian and colombian champions have to be considered the favorites to go through to the 2nd round.

Bolivar: Playing in La Paz is always tough and Bolivia's most popular team usually makes the most of it. They are very experienced and have a lot of Bolivian top players and their signings so far have been pretty good. But still they will be outmatched against the likes of Atletico PR and America de Cali. They'll put a good fight but they'll finish THIRD.

Atlatico Paraenense: The brazilian champions are on a high and they are certainly very talented especially up front with the deadly Alex Mineiro leading their attack. But the lack of experience in this type of competition and having to play two road games in high altitude, something they have never done before, will knock them down to SECOND

America de Cali: The colombians were very unlucky to not get to the semis last year. With the return of Jairo Castillo and some new signings they look powerful this time around. They are certainly quarterfinal material at least. FIRST

Olmedo the ecuadorian provincial team have benn on an amazing run in the last couple of years. But though they are still solid they are on decline, too many of their top players have gone to bigger clubs in the ecuadorian league. Besides they are simply outclassed in this group. FOURTH

You are right colocolo what an great team America had in the mid-80's. Cabanas, Gareca, De Avila and Battaglia were just simply awesome!!!!!!!. Too bad they could never actually win it the Libertadores Cup. But getting to the final four times
is just damm impresive.

Atletico Paranaense is a serious contender for the title, they won the Brazilian league with merits and great football, they have kept all their starters and still managed to improve their bench and depth.

With all due respect to America Cali, I cannot see Atletico Paranaense missing on the top of this group's table.

America has built a solid base of young players that had kept for the last seasons maintaining also the same coach. They can clearly win the group but facing the brazilian champions sounds really scary. I can't say the same about the other two teams, tough.

Pavon is a great striker...Gets NO plying time with Udinese, contrary to Mexico where he always was a starter no matter which team it was...If he comes to America it would be great.... Also just another note I grabed from www.teamtalk.com on Atletico Paraenense, in their biweekly Team Poll commentary :
"Atletico Paranaense: Recovered from an opening-round loss in the Sul-Minas with a victory over reigning Brazilian second division champs Figueirense. Considering that Paranaense are the reigning first division champs, the victory means little, but it’s hard to count it against them, so Paranaense stay static in our rankings for the time being."

So they have started strugglin already :eyepatch:!!! They really dont scare me, and shouldt scare America either !!! :lala:

In the first game of the season, Atletico Paranaense lost to Cruzeiro, while fielding only 2 starters. One week later, with all players back from vacation, they collected three points in an away game against Brazil's Serie B champion, which is not a trivial thing.

Moreover, it seems that America Cali just lost Jersson Gonzales to Galatasaray...

Too bad, last year he was America's most impressive player in the Libertadores by a mile IMO.

Here you got two teams full of history and with a respectable background in Libertadores Cup. FLAMENGO and AMERICA are absolutely favorites to get a next round passport. In this way America and Flamengo are teams with a lot of possibilities to get a place in the final match for the cup.

MEGAPOLEMICO AMERICA TOP PLAYERS ARE:
Luis Barbat; Foad Maziri; Edison Mafla; David Ferreira; Fabián Vargas y Julián Vásquez.

1. AMERICA
2. Paranaense
3. Olmedo
4. Bolivar

Atlético Paranaense face Bolívar in the Copa Libertadores kick-off

4 February 2002 (www.TEAMtalk.com) --

Atlético Paranaense will take on Bolivian side Bolívar on Tuesday at Arena da Baixada Stadium in Coritiba in the first round of the Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores.

Paranaense coach Geninho will have all his regulars except playmaker Kléberson, who is with the Brazilian national team, which will play a friendly against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

"We'll use our main weapon, which is the attack," said Geninho, who trusts his attacking duo Kléber and Alex Mineiro.

This is only the second Copa Libertadores campaign in the history of Paranaense, the reigning Brazilian champions. Their last appearance in the tournament was in 1999, when they lost to Atlético Mineiro on the penalty-kicks in the quarter-finals.

As for Bolívar, coach Vladimir Soria is reportedly yet to decide on starters at two positions. Rubén Tufiño and Iván Castillo are each candidates for a role in the midfield, and Gonzalo Galindo and Horacio Chiorazzo are both candidates at one of the striker positions.

Soria's team will play with three defenders and two defensive midfielders on a 3-5-2 formation.

Likely line-ups:

Atlético Paranaense - Flávio; Rogério Correa, Wellington Paulo, Igor; Alessandro, Cocito, Adriano, Fabrício, Fabiano; Alex Mineiro, Kléber. Coach: Geninho.

Bolívar - José Carlo Fernández; Luis Gatty Ribeiro, Oscar Sánchez, Martín Lígori; Marco Sandy, Rubén Tufiño (Iván Castillo), Edgar Olivares, Pedro Guiberguis, Percy Colque; Joaquín Botero, Gonzalo Galindo (Horacio Chiorazzo). Coach: Vladimir Soria.

Referee: Gustavo Gallesio (Uruguay).
