Lazio hope to increase their Argentine contingent with international striker Pablo Aimar.

The 23-year-old Valencia forward is top of the transfer list for new Coach Roberto Mancini and already has close links to the club.

Aimar’s agent is Gustavo Mascardi, who also deals with Hernan Crespo, Juan Sebastian Veron, Lucas Castroman, Diego Simeone and Marcelo Salas.

The Biancocelesti are also close to Valencia following deals for Gaizka Mendieta and Claudio Lopez.

This is not the first time that Aimar has been in talks for a move to Serie A. Lazio and Parma had shown interest in the player when he made an impact at River Plate in 1998.

However, his young age and the arrival of Salas that season put the Roman side off the move.

Now the future World Cup star’s price tag has risen to just over £9m, but the probable sale of Crespo and Claudio Lopez should be able to finance the move.

Lazio have already officially signed another Argentine, Juan Pablo Sorin, from Brazilian club Cruzeiro.
