Chelsea won their opening pre-season friendly with a 3-1 win over Kingstonian. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored his first Chelsea goal. Further goals from Di Matteo and Stanic sealed the win.

Although the game was very much a run out rather than anything seriously competitive, with most of the side being substituted at some stage, it was still a useful excercise.

With the Euro 2000 players still away those taking part included Hitchcock, Cudicini, Ferrer, Lamborde, Harley, Dalla Bona, Poyet, Wolleaston, Gudjohnsen, Alexsidze, Di Matteo, Stanic, Zola, Hasselbaink

Also in a clever move to aid fitness, Vialli decided to play the whole match with just 10 men to Kingstonian's 11, also making for a more even contest.

Zola was in sparkling form and set up all 3 goals. The first came when he showed some superb juggling skills before putting in Hasselbaink and having been on the pitch for just 7 minutes after the break, the 15 million pound man slammed home a low drive to make it 1-0. 5 minutes later Zola crossed for Di Matteo to bring the ball down and slot home.

After a misplaced backpass, Kingstonian scored their goal before Chelsea made it 3-1 with Zola setting up Stanic for a header. Hasselbaink limped off at the end after a collision but it should just be a precautionary move.

Always difficult to read much into a game like this, but Vialli will no doubt be pleased with a comfortable win.
