Dyer flies to Dubai to prove fitness

LONDON, May 15 (AFP)
Kieron Dyer was told to join the England squad in Dubai on Wednesday in order to prove his fitness to England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson ahead of the World Cup.
Dyer was the victim of an horrendous tackle from Southampton's Moroccan defender Tahar El Khalej during Newcastle's final Premiership match of the season last Saturday.
Midfielder Dyer suffered damage to his knee ligaments and had been told he needed a "miracle" recovery to secure his place in Eriksson's 23-man squad. But he is reported to have made major progress during recent days.
His World Cup place remains in the balance but Eriksson now has a chance to assess Dyer's fitness ahead of the FIFA squad deadline of May 21.
The medical advice received by Eriksson on Sunday, after Dyer had been examined by the Newcastle and England staff, was that he would be out for four weeks.
With Gary Neville and Steven Gerrard already ruled out of the squad by injury, Danny Murphy and Trevor Sinclair are on standby to be officially included in the final party if Dyer is ruled unfit.
