A great 3.5 years from KK has simply run its course. He took over when he were relegated from the Prem, returned us as Div 1 champions at the first attempt scoring 99 goals along the way. A first year back finish of 9th was never followed up. Some memorable games notably back to back wins at home to Utd (what were they again...oh yeah 3-1 and 4-1) plus the miraculous 4-3 comeback win at Spurs in the Cup.
Utd fans may scoff but he's won as many trophies as they will this season.
Thanks for the memories KK and enjoy a well earned retirement. You knew when to leave....pity some others don't do the same.

Keegan ends his reign at Man City

CITY UNDER KEEGAN
May 02: Win old Div One title with 108 goals
May 03: Finish ninth in Premiership
Nov 03: Knocked out of Uefa Cup by Polish minnows Groclin
Feb 04: 10-man City beat Spurs 4-3 in FA Cup having trailed 3-0
Mar 04: Beat Man Utd 4-1 at Eastlands
Jan 05: Knocked out of FA Cup by Oldham
Mar 05: Parts company with club

Manchester City have confirmed that manager Kevin Keegan has left the club 15 months ahead of his expected departure date.
The 54-year-old goes after just over three-and-a-half years in charge to end his career in management.

"We all believe this is in the best interests of the club," said an official club statement.

"His professionalism, infectious enthusiasm and drive for success have benefited all areas of the club."

News of Keegan's exit broke late on Thursday night, and City chairman John Wardle is set to hold a news conference on Friday at 1300 GMT.

Despite his premature departure, Keegan's stint in charge - three years and 10 months - makes him City's longest-serving manager for 26 years.

And while the club begins the search for its 10th manager in just 12 years, coach Stuart Pearce will be responsible for first-team affairs until the end of the season, with Tottenham away his first game on 19 March.

Pearce at helm for rest of season

Keegan, who had previously managed Newcastle, Fulham and England, took over as City manager on 24 May 2001 and guided them to the old Division One title in his first full season.

For the return to the Premiership he put together a squad including Nicolas Anelka and Robbie Fowler, and achieved a finishing position of ninth while qualifying for the Uefa Cup through the Fair Play League.

But the following season, 2003-2004, saw them knocked out of the Uefa Cup by Polish minnows Groclin Dyskobolia and also finish fifth from bottom in the Premiership.

That campaign did include a memorable FA Cup victory at Tottenham, when they went 3-0 behind but won 4-3, but it was to be a rare highlight.

The current season has not been much better, with an FA Cup exit to Oldham and a Carling Cup defeat to an Arsenal reserve team.

Keegan made it clear he would not be staying beyond next season but when City lost at home to Bolton on Monday, and slipped to 12th in the table, Keegan sounded at the end of his tether.

"We've got a history of not building on good situations," he admitted.

"We could have jumped into the European shake-up, again we couldn't make that leap.

"That's seven or eight times in a year we could have jumped into something good for this club and we've failed."

Woah, just got back 2 hours ago, and had heard none of this whatsover, so imagine my shock when I checked skytext page 253 and heard James talking about FORMER manager KK. I was shocked to be honest. I expected him to leave at the end of the season. Its was surprising to see him go mid-season, as there had been no fan pressure, and things have been going fairly well on the pitch, despite being 12th.

I think it was a wise move by the board though, as it gives Pearce a chance to prove himself. With safety virtually assured, we can afford to experiment a little. There were reports that he had lost the dressing room, especially after David James' comments and when the players requested extra training in March 2004. Pearce is a decent coach and was a captain for us, so should have the players' respect. And if he is poor for us, we'll stay up and just get a new manager in the summer. It gives him an oppurtunity to learn the ropes in preparation for next season. It seems like he is going to be permanent IMO, as he is being put in placer for next season, and has been widely touted for the job since the summer.

Im well pleased for Sturat Pearce. Keegan deserved to go. After a good first two years at the club. He's lost the charisma and after repeated comments about leaving when his contract is up it was inevitable. The money that he has wasted is unbelievable. His treatment of some players was appalling and questianable buys like Vuoso who cost over 3 million! Will long be remembered.

Looks like Pearce is doing well though eh? The players are talking positively of him, and despite losing, it was a good performance against Spurs, plenty of positives and definately encouraging.
