Keane - new doubts allayed

Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Roy Keane has been diagnosed with a torn hamstring and nothing worse - prompting a huge nationwide sigh of relief in Ireland.

A scan revealed a bad tear to Kean'e hamstring and Ferguson now believes that he will have his skipper back in time for the Champions League final - if United make it that far.

"It's a hamstring injury, not a knee injury," Ferguson said. "It's four to six weeks, hopefully sooner. If we get to the Champions League final on May 15, Roy should be okay to play."

Keane injured himself in a first-half tackle with Sergio during Manchester United's 2-0 Champions League win over Deportivo and it was reported that the damage was to his hamstring and not his knee.

Typically with a bad hamstring tear, blood obeys gravity and pools in the knee, making it impossible to perform a scan on the area for up to 72 hours after the injury.

The problem for Keane is that he already had a problem with his knee, similar to that which has now put paid to Carr's chances and has nothing to do with his cruciate ligament.
