Sangol on the captancy, FCB Web page:

Everything for FCB

That also applies to the nomination of a new club captain. “I’d be delighted to take the armband, but it’s the coach’s decision,” commented Sagnol, who will in any case assume a powerful position in the dressing room hierarchy as the club’s longest-serving player. “After eight years at a club, you’ve got to be sharing your experience,” he observed, making it clear he would do exactly that: “My heart belongs to Bayern,” he declared.

I don't think Van Bommel is cool enough on the field. Sometimes he gets dumb cards for stupid challenges. How do you expect him to lead?
Wasn't Effenberg the same?

I bealive Kahn and Effenberg were both very good captains, and neither of them was cool enough either. In fact, Kahn and Effenberg probably did more stupid things in their times than van Bommel.

Besides being a leader is about having attitude and to push forward the team when the team needs it. Someone the young talents respect and the old players agree with him.

I expect a leader to fight for the team and shirt he is wearing.

van Bommel was the captain for those great PSV teams, and by all accounts was very mature and influential.

I think Sangol's whining last season was inexcusable, and I don't really belive his heart is completely with Bayern. As much as I'd love to see a German captain, there don't seem to be any great candidates (Lahm isn't a true captain for me).
