Sao Paulo defeated Palmeiras last Tuesday in the away leg of their quarter final battle in the Parque Antarctica and have thus guaranteed their place in the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil. After winning 2 - 1 at home, Sao Paulo once again came out on top in a topsy-turvy game, this time winning by a margin of 3 - 2. They now face Atletico Mineiro. This is the first time that Sao Paulo have reached this stage of the competition.

Sao Paulo began powerfully and Vagner opened the scoring after 14 minutes, the midfielder was involved in a great move by Rai and Marcelinho and his shot left little chance for Marcos. Palmeiras had not expected to be at a disadvantage so early in the game and lost concentration. A lot of missed passes made it hard for any consolidated come back..

Marcos made a great save leaping up to push a shot by Sandro Hiroshi wide after 20 minutes. His influence certainly gave Palmeiras some confidence and they equalized soon after. In a well taken free kick over the human barrier Rogerio slotted the ball into the top right hand corner of the net.

The end of the first half was a wild affair with yellow (and one red) cards flying and both coaches complaining about what was some very dubious refereeing. Both left the field before the half time whistle and were barred from the sidelines in the second half. Tension was still high at the start of the second half, but this time on the field. Sao Paulo were on top and Fabio Aurelio almost scored. The first attempt failed but after a spirited individual run down the right Sandro Hiroshi crossed into the area and the defenders completely misjudged the ball leaving it free for Rai to nonchalantly back heel it into the net for number 2.

Palmeiras did not give an inch and kept up the pressure. After 15 minutes, Junior was brought down in the area and Rogerio took it perfectly to equalize again. If Palmeiras had shown that they were not downhearted when fighting from one down, the will to win was quadrupled after they equalized.

However, Palmeiras saw the light fading after 24 minutes after a play by Pimentel down the right. The winger beat two defenders and crossed to Sandro Hiroshi who notched up number three.

Palmeiras: Marcos, Rogerio, Indio, Argel, Tiago; Galeano, Cesar Sampaio, Pena (Nenem), Junior; Euller (Luiz Claudio) and Basilio (Alberto).
Coach: Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Sao Paulo: Rogerio, Pimentel, Edmílson, Rogerio Pinheiro, Fabio Aurelio; Alexandre, Vagner (Fabiano), Marcelinho, Rai (Carlos Miguel); Edu (Evair) and Sandro Hiroshi.
Coach: Levir Culpi.
