Buffon; Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Barzagli, Grosso; Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi; Camoranesi, Toni, Di Natale

The only one I'm the least unsure of is Gattuso.

No f***ing way Matrix should start against those speedy Dutch.
Barzagli isn't a bullet either. I think we could use Materazzi's superior talent. It's hard to judge from one friendly though. Decision will be made from practices.

I echo your doubts about Gattuso. Will we see the Roma deep mid (deep mid = DDR + Aquilani, no Perrotta) + Pirlo?

DDR Aquilani
Pirlo (f. r.)

The difference with this and

Aquilani Gattuso
Pirlo (f. r.)

is Gattuso's superior mobility over DDR, which is maybe the reason Gattuso was prefered over DDR. Aquilani and Pirlo are weak physically and maybe Donadoni preferred Gattuso for his strength combined with his mobility/stamina.

The new midfield is very nice but it hasn't been tested sustaining much pressure. This is an important aspect.

I know the DDR+Pirlo+Gattuso midfield is kind of choppy, but it can take some heat and can keep posession too. It is maybe not our best midfield but I think there is little risk with it at the moment.

So let us try the new one but no one knows if it can take it yet.

The reason for Gattuso being preferred over De Rossi in combination with Pirlo and Aquilani is to have a more mobile destruction unit.

There is also another idea which I proposed long ago that was rejected by many that was the DDR slows down the play too much for the NT. There is a higher quality of talent on the team in terms of distribution and creativity and DDR could dampen it.

I'm for Toni being dropped as well. Really really terrible performance from him.
Absolutely useless to shit on Toni and misaimed too.

The Milan midfield is terrible. It is the reason we lost. As for Materazzi, we will never see him again in this tournament.

Di Natale is a good choice with a midfield that is skilled. Think of Trezeguet without support. To me, Di Natale is a winger but at this level, not enough quality and basically simply a Trez figure to score goals. I wouldn't have minded him if we played Aquilani and/or De Rossi.

Anyway, big stepping stone for Donadoni. Please don't throw him in the garbage yet. He is a good man and has made very good decisions along the way too.
