That date is propably one of the most dramatic days in Lazio history, a day that is on a par with the one two weeks earlier, June 21st 1987. This is a happy ending of a story that speaks of a team that fought and beat it's destiny.

In the begining of the season, due to the involvment of it's players in a match-fixing scandal(again), Lazio was forced to start the season in serie B with a 9 point deduction, a decision which overturned the one that condemned Lazio to an automatic relegation to serie C. In the days of two points per victory, this was seen by everyone only as a postponement of the inevitable. Everyone except for coach Eugenio Fascetti and his team.

Lazio managed to get to a three-team play-offs with Taranto and Campobasso thanks to a Giuliano Fiorini goal on the last day of the regular season. Two top teams out of three were to stay in serie B. Lazio lost it's first game against Taranto and Taranto and Campobasso played a draw, meaning that Lazio had to win against Campobasso to save themselves. The game was played on Napoli's San Paolo stadium. Lazio attacked but could not break the resolute Campobasso. In the begining of the second half Campobasso striker Goretti was one-on-one with goalkeeper Terraneo, but did not score. Right on the break, Lazio's Piscedda crossed the ball and Fabio Poli headed it home. Minutes passed like hours from then but the renowned Italian international Paolo Casarin blew the final whistle. It stayed 1-0 to Lazio meaning that Lazio remained in Serie B. The 20 000 jubilant fans that traveled from Rome exposed a banner that said: "9 punti non sono stati sufficienti, la prossima volta provate a darcene 20" (9 points was not enough, next time try taking away 20)

Thankfully, we will never know what wouls have become of Lazio if it was not for Fiorini and Poli. It can be said, however, with great propability, that none of the great things that happened in the nineties, the trophies, the victories, the champions we have(or have had) would have been possible if that team had not achieved it's epic victory. That season marked the end of our 80-ies misfortunes and we were on the ascendancy ever since.

Here they all are, Gli Eroi di Meno Nove(the heroes of minus nine) as they are known to every Lazio fan. Remember them, honour them.

Giuliano Terraneo, Antonio Elia Acerbis, Massimo Piscedda, Giancarlo Camolese, Angelo Adamo Gregucci, Raimondo Marino, Fabio Poli, Domenico Caso, Giuliano Fiorini, Gabriele Pin, Paolo Mandelli and coach Eugenio Fascetti.

Grazie per sempre, Eroi di Meno Nove!
