Madrid reinforces league leadership with 3-1 win over Rayo

April 6, 2002
MADRID, Spain (AP) --

Real Madrid reinforced its position as Spanish league leader on Saturday with a comfortable 3-1 home victory over struggling cross-town rival Rayo Vallecano in an early 33rd-round match.

Madrid's win, which came courtesy of strikes by Roberto Carlos, Fernando Morientes and a Luis Figo penalty, increases pressure on Valencia, which lies three points behind, ahead of its home game with Real Sociedad on Sunday.

In other games Saturday, Diego Tristan fired a first-half hat-trick as Deportivo de La Coruna romped to a 5-0 victory over Mallorca, while FC Barcelona won 2-0 at Athletic de Bilbao. Las Palmas drew 1-1 with Zaragoza.

Madrid has 62 points. Valencia has 59, a point ahead of third-place Deportivo. Barcelona moves up to fourth with 54 points, ahead on goal difference of Celta de Vigo, which visits Espanyol Sunday.

Madrid, which aims to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday, was hardly troubled by relegation candidate Rayo.

The home side's first goal arrived in the 10th minute when a long shot by left back Roberto Carlos hit the post but then bounced into the net off the back of the outstretched Rayo goalkeeper Imanol Etxeberria.

It was the normally free-scoring Brazilian international's first goal since Madrid's 5-1 league win over Espanyol 5-1 on Sept. 22.

Morientes added a second in the 39th minute when he seized on a clever through pass by star striker Raul Gonzalez.

The goal was the Spanish international striker's 17th of the season.

Figo made his return as a 77th-minute substitute for French midfielder Zinedine Zidane after missing six league games because of injury.

Only two minutes later, the Portuguese international converted a penalty after another Madrid substitute Jose Maria ``Guti'' Gutierrez had been obstructed in the area by French defender Jean Francois Hernandez.

Hernandez atoned for his foul by heading Rayo's consolation goal two minutes from the end of the match.

Tristan's three goals -- against his former club -- came in a 13-minute spell as Deportivo bounced back in style from Tuesday's 2-0 home defeat against Manchester United in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg.

The Spanish international, who attracted wide criticism for his wild last-minute tackle on United midfielder David Beckham in Tuesday's game, netted goals in the 21st, 28th and 34th minutes.

The second strike was the standout effort, the Spanish international cutting in from the left, eluding Mallorca's international centerback Miguel Angel Nadal, before sending an impudent chip over Argentine goalkeeper Leo Franco.

The hat-trick takes Tristan's league total for the season to 18 goals, making him the first division's top marksman.

Midfielder Victor Sanchez added his side's fourth just before the interval, while another midfielder Sergio Gonzalez compounded Mallorca's misery with a fifth goal in the 62nd minute.

Deportivo was hit by first-half injuries to its Brazilian midfielder Mauro Silva and central defender Cesar Martin. Initial media reports said that Mauro should be fit to play against the English titlist at Old Trafford on Wednesday although Spanish international Cesar could be ruled out.

Two strikes by Javier Saviola -- his first away goals in the league since joining the club last summer -- earned Barcelona its victory over a Bilbao side which had conceded 11 goals in its last two matches.

The Argentine headed the first from close range in the 17th minute after Rivaldo's corner had been flicked on by Philippe Christanval.

Without the suspended Patrick Kluivert and injured Carles Puyol, the Catalan team was made to battle hard in the second half to protect its slender lead.

However, Saviola calmed his side's nerves with a second goal and his 13th of the season after receiving a defense-splitting pass from substitute Xavi Hernandez.

Barcelona's victory relieves a little pressure on its embattled coach Carles Rexach, although his immediate future is said to depend on whether his team can overturn a 1-0 deficit against Panathinaikos in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg at the Nou Camp Tuesday.

Also Saturday, a penalty by Las Palmas midfielder Jorge Larena early in the second half was leveled by Zaragoza forward Juanele Castano in the 70th minute.

Defender Tomas Olias missed the home side's second spot-kick with five minutes remaining.

Sunday's matches include: Espanyol vs. Celta de Vigo; Malaga vs. Tenerife; Alaves vs. Villarreal; Valladolid vs. Sevilla; Valencia vs. Real Sociedad; Real Betis vs. Osasuna.

Valencia and Real equal on points at top

MADRID, April 7 (AFP) -

Valencia ensured the Spanish title race stays close as they thrashed Real Sociedad 4-0 on Sunday to put themselves back on the same number of points as Real Madrid.
Ruben Baraja, Kily Gonzalez, Miguel Angel Angulo and Mista each scored past former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld at the Mestalla stadium.
Real Madrid are still top with a superior goal difference after defeating city rivals Rayo Vallecano 3-1 on Saturday as Portuguese international Luis Figo made a goal-scoring return from injury.
Real's first goal at the Bernabeu was farcical as Brazilian international defender Roberto Carlos unleashed a shot which rebounded off the post before striking the legs of Vallecano goalkeeper Imanol Etxeberria and rolling into the net.
Morientes rounded Etxeberria for the second goal in the 38th minute.
Figo made his return after a month out with an ankle injury as he came on for Zinedine Zidane in the 77th minute.
Within a minute, Guti had been fouled to earn a penalty and Figo stepped up to stroke the spot kick into the net.
Jean Francois claimed a consolation for Vallecano but Madrid looked impressive before they host Bayern Munich on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with the Germans leading 2-1.
Deportivo La Coruna striker Diego Tristan was roundly condemned after a dreadful challenge on Manchester United star David Beckham in their Champions League match in midweek.
But Tristan showed his real talent by scoring a hat-trick in Deportivo's 5-0 thrashing of Real Mallorca. He needed just 13 minutes to take all three goals as Victor and Sergio added the finishing touches.
Deportivo are third, four points behind Real Madrid.
Barcelona's Argentinian youngster Javier Saviola underlined what he could achieve at this year's World Cup finals when he scored both goals in his side's 2-0 win at Athletic Bilbao.p
Saviola will hope he has earned a first-team place for Barca's Champions League return with Panathinaikos on Tuesday after being left on the bench for the 1-0 defeat in the first leg.
