Joao Pinto has hung up his boots. Many will argue that Figo or Rui were the best players of the golden generation but fact is that Joao was the brightest start when they were all playing in the same field.

One can only imagine what would have become of him if he were to play in the EPL, La Ligo or Serie A.

Carlos Queiroz on JVP:

I didn't like Joao Pinto. He was always ready to put himself above coach or team. But he played until 36, so I have to give him credit for that.

He did get a chance to play in La Liga. One season at Atletico before being returned to Boavista.

A great player, but another example of the bad image and reputation all of us have received over the years. An extremely poor professional with very little respect for teammates, officials, or the sport in itself.

Hopefully his son does well, and I wish JVP the best of luck, but at the same time I hope our country's youngersters can look at him and see an example of how not to act.

Joao returned to Boavista because at the time they had the 3 foreign player rule and not this EU citizen crap. He was young and that's what happened, but he also turned down a huge offer from Arsenal even though Benfica wanted him to go for $$$$ reasons.

I agree with killa and Joshua on this.

Joao Pinto was a great little player but due to some mental faults he let us down on a few times, but in saying that he was a great player who won't be acknowledged the way he should outside of Portugal. Oh well.

JVP was incredibly talented, I don't think he fulfilled his potential though, a player of his caliber should have gone abroad and conquered more titles. His personality traits and temperment may have hindered him but his ability was there for all to see. If anyone hasn't watched it, look online for the Benfica v Sporting 6-3 game, he was INCREDIBLE in that game.
