I couldnt believe this article when i first read it, i thought it was some sort of April Fools prank.....

Hawthorn midfielder Daniel Chick has had the ring finger on his left hand partially amputated, as a last-ditch solution to a chronic three-year injury.

Chick will be back at training on Monday but will take a two-week break from ball work, after he had the finger removed just below the knuckle in the surgery on Tuesday.

He decided to have the amputation when the finger, initially injured when it got "jammed up" during a smothering attempt against Melbourne early in 1999, continued to cause him pain after returning for training in November.

The only option was to have the finger fused, but Chick feared it would impede his play. "It was a last resort for the finger to be amputated," he said in a statement released by the Hawks last night.

After multiple dislocations during 2000, the extremely painful injury flared again last April, with the finger popping in and out during games and forcing the midfielder to miss one match.

Chick had two pins inserted in the finger, had them removed after three weeks and played the last 10 matches of the season with taped fingers. He said the pain was so bad because the finger didn't bend, causing residual pain in his arm.

"The joint became very swollen and fused and it would keep getting caught in opposition players' jumpers," he said in the statement. "The tendons were getting wrapped around the joint."

Once healed, the amputation should not impede Chick's ball handling or marking. "I didn't mark a ball for three weeks after the (earlier) operation. If the guys kicked it to me, I let the ball bounce," he said. "I had only two options, and I don't think fusing the finger would allow me to play the way I want."

Wow!! :)

I totally couldn't believe that either. When I first heard it on radio, I'm like...Daniel Chick...Middle Finger...Amputated...WHAT THE F*CK!!!

And the sad thing is he serverly injured his finger against Melbourne, my team. On behalf of the Melbourne Football Club, we apologise Daniel Chick for causing your finger great pain.

I wonder if he will wear a glove, like the legendary Jack Mueller of Melbourne, who had 3 fingeras and wore a leather glove.
