Italy Won The 2nd Round Match. Blatter Says!!!!

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has fanned the flames of Italy's controversial World Cup exit by saying the Azzurri were robbed of a golden goal.

Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno ruled Damiano Tomassi had been offside in extra-time, preventing the Roma player from scoring after he ran on to a pass from Christian Vieri.

Blatter claimed Italy, who in total had three goals apparently incorrectly ruled out for offside in the group stage, had been unfairly treated.

"The referees in the World Cup have been inadequate, the circumstances have made the mistakes to be concentrated on one team, Italy," Blatter told Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Tommasi's action was legal and Italy would have scored the golden goal."

Blatter is also quoted as saying that Francesco Totti, who received a second yellow card from Moreno when he went down in the box, should not have been booked a second time and thus sent off.

Video replay suggests there was contact between the Roma star and a Korean opponent.

"Regarding Totti, it was not a penalty nor a simulation," said Blatter. "Now we have to try and change the system of designate referees."

However, Moreno himself claimed: "The Azzurri have gone out and it is their own fault. Fifa has congratulated me."

a better version of the interview.

ROME, June 20 (Reuters) - FIFA president Sepp Blatter has launched a strong condemnation of refereeing at the World Cup, saying Italy had been the main victims on the way to their shock quarter-final elimination.

Sepp Blatter: Far from impressed (Reuters)
But he denied media allegations that FIFA had been part of a plot to oust Italy in favour of hosts South Korea, calling on the Italians to show dignity in defeat.

The head of soccer's ruling body also told Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport that he would demand changes in the way referees were selected in future, with the emphasis on ability rather than nationality.

'The refereeing has been the only negative aspect of this World Cup,' Blatter said, replying to howls of protest in Italy over a string of controversial decisions which eventually saw them knocked out by South Korea on Tuesday.

'The (referees) have been quite good, but the (linesmen) have been a disaster, especially when it comes to offside...they haven't even realised that it is better to award an offside goal than to disallow a good goal.'

Italy complained bitterly after they were knocked out, saying a string of mistakes by referees had combined to sink the three-times world champions.

TOTTI 'DIVE'

The team had five goals controversially disallowed during their four matches and also had striker Francesco Totti sent off in the South Korea game for allegedly diving in the penalty area - a decision that Blatter condemned.

'Sadly, and I have suffered greatly because of it, there have been exceptional circumstances and coincidences that saw many errors consecutively made against the same team, Italy,' he said.

'Totti's sending off against Korea was neither a penalty nor a dive. A referee with a feeling (for the game) would not have shown him the card, bearing in mind the same player had already been booked.'

The Ecuadorian referee, Byron Moreno, has defended the sending-off.

'I would do it again. I don't even have to watch the replays...Totti dived,' he said in an interview with Il Messaggero newspaper published on Thursday.

Blatter told La Gazzetta: 'A World Cup that receives the best players and teams in the world should be overseen by the best referees regardless of their nationality...from now on we will call in the best, full stop, even if they come from just a handful of countries.'

'FAIR PLAY'

But while accepting that Italy had been unlucky to be knocked out, he added: 'Italy's elimination is not only down to referees and linesmen who made human not premeditated errors...Italy made mistakes both in defence and in attack.

'I call on Italian soccer to display some dignity and fair play because you can tell a great side more by the way it accepts defeat than by the way it handles victory.'

Italy were not the only side unhappy with the refereeing, he said, saying Turkey, Slovenia, Spain, Belgium and Mexico had all complained.

On Thursday, however, Edgardo Codesal Mendez, a member of FIFA's referees' committee, defended the referees.

'We'll have to wait until the final to evaluate the whole tournament, but until now the referees in general have done a very good job,' he said.

'They are human beings, they are not machines.'

ENJOY

Yes Italia, a rematch sounds to be the best option, but highly unlikely.:fero:
FIFA has accepted defeat from Italy. thats the main thing but after few months the team which wins the WC will be hailed and enter the record books and everybody apart from the Italians will forget this episode as an unfortunate one.:depress:

Sepp Blatter should keep his stealing, lying, crooked mouth shut. Totti dived. He was going down before he was touched. The offside rule is simple. The flag goes up, it's offside, it doesn't go up, it's not offside.

Stick a fork in Italy, they're done.

I am even more angered by Morenos comments

He said Italy makes these allegations, beacause they think they are world champions (Hint: he is not amused by Italy thinking that and wants to do something about it

He has refused to comment on Tomassi while commenting on other things

He says now that he is going to enjoy his vacations in the U.S with his family

And even them admit it...

From www.soccerage.com

'Korea Times' Acknowledges Moreno's Mistakes

06/20/2002. The 'Korea Times', a Korean newspaper published in English, admitted Italy were right to complain about the unfair treatment they received from referee Byron Moreno.

"The Italians are understandably angry. Tommasi appeared to be on-side when he presented himself alone in front of the Korean net only to be waved offside by the linesman," read the front-page article.

"Also Totti's sending off can be considered exaggerated, even though the player went down a bit too easily and the second yellow card could be an understandable reaction on behalf of a referee who thought the player was trying to fool him," continued the story.

Italy left Korea early this morning saluted by a huge number of fans.

why did Totti appeal for the penalty when he went down? you can clearly see him raising his hands pleading for a penalty. Explain that to me pleeeeeeeeease!!! And since it was not a penalty, it can lead to only one thing....a booking.

You know what's worse than your whinging? the fact that you believe what Blatter says.

So, by your definition, anybody who gets fouled in the penalty box, appeals for a penalty, and does not get the penalty should automatically be yellow carded?????

Give me a break!

use your brain....do i have to write "totti dived" in every single post for you to understand?

he dived, then pleaded for a penalty. if that doesnt warrant a yellow card for simulation i dont know what does.

At the end of the day..Italy is out. they played badly and lost. Seriously, look at the performance of the players and the missed chances, but you can live in denial all you want.

The reason that I said, When the flag is up it's offside, is because the AR has the best position to see if the player is offside when the ball is played. Camera angles can be deceiving, they often have a paralax view and one can appear onside when actually they are not. Remember, even a hand in the offside position makes the player offside.

Italy got screwed in the Croatia game. That was a very bad call by the AR. But, Tomassi's play was very close, and Sepp Blatter, all of Italy, and everyone on this board has a biased position. I personally, am ambivalent.

My team is still in it. How 'bout yours.

How can one say Tommasis goal was a winner. Agreed it was onside, but the ref blew the whistle way before he finished, the goalkeeper didnt attempt to make a save.
