Italians made Knights of the Republic
By Jude Webber
ROME (Reuters)(DS) - Italian media cursed their side's bad luck after the 2-1 defeat by
France in the Euro 2000 final but the players awoke on Monday to find they had been
made Knights of the Republic.
Newspapers, struggling to put a brave face on things, also blamed bad refereeing
and praised the performance of the underdog side no one expected to do so well.
The appreciation was echoed by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who
watched the match and went into the changing room afterwards to offer his
condolences to the distraught squad. He later made all the players Knights of the
Republic.
Reflecting the Italian loss to a golden goal by David Trezeguet, Corriere dello Sport
devoted half of its front page to a headline, in giant black letters, reading "What bad
luck".
"We deserved the title," it added underneath.
"We got into to the final by a stroke of luck because the Dutch deserved to go
through," L'Unita newspaper said in a front-page editorial, referring to Italy's semifinal
defeat of the home favourites on penalties.
"And we were beaten in the final by a stroke of bad luck. We deserved to win
yesterday's match," L'Unita added.
La Stampa daily, speaking for many Italians, said Swedish referee Anders Frisk
"dragged the stoppage time on intolerably".
"Accursed minute" ran the headline in Il Messaggero daily. Sports Bible Gazzetta
dello Sport called it "hateful".
But commentators consoled themselves with Italy's improved performance after
their ultra-defensive play in the semifinals.
"What a shame. Italy were great," Gazzetta's headline said.

SPECULATIVE
"After so much criticism of our speculative style of soccer, Italy had shown World
Cup champions France that it could play as well or better," Gazzetta's editor Candido
Cannavo said.
"Thanks anyway, Azzurri," ran La Stampa's headline.
RAI state radio commented wrly that Italy were used to winning by playing badly,
but not to losing when they played well.
Former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi, a stern critic of Italy's traditionally defensive play,
offered bitter-sweet praise, saying in an editorial in La Stampa that France perhaps
deserved to win but that Italy had been "magnificent".
"They fought with fury, doggedly, with courage. No one held back. This team could
not have done any better," he said.
In the search for a scapegoat, most pointed the finger at striker Alessandro Del
Piero, who missed two chances that could have sealed Italy's victory.
A photograph of him, flat on his back on the pitch, his hands over his eyes,
summed up Italy's despair on many newspaper front pages.
"Next season will be the crucial one to see what's left of the great champion we
once knew," Corriere dello Sport said.

The Italians have much to be proud of, yes. But there is no way they are the best in the world. If they were the best, they would not have been knocked out in the quarterfinals of WC98 or lost the final of Euro2000.

The French are the best, followed by the Brazilians.

the facts are half of the french team plays in italy, so do alot of top brazilian players. therefore, italy is a training ground on how other countries can learn from serie a, and then beat the azururri. lets face if, 4 minutes of injury time? scored in the last 20 seconds thats, luck- thats alot of luck! and to lose in 94 and 98 on penalties and know this- thats bad luck! italy recieves no respect at all however they continue to throw good money at worthless forieghners. berlusconi, croggiatti, moratti agnielli etc they are the real reason why italy's national team is unable to bring home the hard wear.

we will be back, buts lets finish the job!

get this straight
brazil are the greatest team with 4 world cups and 7 copa america

italy come second with 3 world cups and one european championship

germany also second with three world cups and 3 european cahmpionships

but the reason italy are also second isn because of how they are right now and the new line of superstars
like fiore pirlo cirillo and so on

but germany have stopped and are going down

as for france they are no way the best team in the world
before france 98 they had not made it to the world cup for 2 consecutive world cups and the only reason the qualified was because they were hosts and dont forget they just made it to euro 2000

Abdul totally agree with you. Who the hell are France?? They have only emerged in the last 3 years as a footballing threat. And as you said before they had to wait to be hosts in 98 to qualify for a world cup. Something they couldn't do since 1986 LOL LOL. OK France in on a roll right now, but lets keep this in mind. The reason why they are doing so well is because they have good players at the moment. Unlike Italy and other great nations, France do not have continuity in their player resources. The reason in most part due to their own WEAK ASS LEAGUE. When their supporting frame of players like Blanc, Deschamps, Zidane and Dugarry(all of which played in the ITALIAN LEAGUE) are gone it will be like another 20 years before before they win anything, let alone qualify for a World Cup! Right now their are many French internationals who play outside France, but this won't last forever. Eventually they will get old and can't cut it in the Italian Serie A. And like I said before their resources won't allow more talented French to come into Italy, BECAUSE THEIR WON'T BE ANY. Their national team can only be good so long as their players are able to play outside the France in better leagues, and as we have seen before 1986 through 1998 it won't last forever. Italy will always be good because we will always have the resources to do well from our own domestic league. Italy needs to abolish the Bosman ruling,we have plenty of talent in our own nation.

Leagues that are better than French league ( Italian, German,Spanish,Dutch,Portuguese,English, Scottish, Brazilian, Argentine. These aren't in any order.

France: a descending parabola in the football scheme of things...At the national level, they've won nothing in the last hundred years until now...will they go Hungary's way? Probably...

I agree Italy is not the best in the world right now, but two years hence they will compete for the honors in Korea/Japan. France, well, we'll have to see...

Re the Bosman rule: it cannot be abolished by individual nations in Europe, however there is hope that UEFA may reach an agreement with the EU to amend labor laws as they apply to player transfers

As much as i hate to admit it France Hollan Argentina and Brazil are all better teams than Italy.

Italy comes a good 5th in the World rankings followed by Czech Republic Portugal and Sapin.

If Fifa world rankings had any logical idea of football they too would reflect what i just said.

italy still have a way to go to reach the levels of Brazil and Holland farless this generation of Argentines and the French.

As for France going the way of Hungary..HAAAA!!!!!!!

you just have to look around and you see great young French players fighting hard to live up to their idols....that is why teams like Argentina and Brazil constantly have great players because they always grow up with legends to look at and admire.

Young French talent you need look no further than probably the best goal keeper since the emergence of Buffon in Sebastion Frey.

Zizou's replacement not in the team but as play maker goes to the great Stephane Dalmat.

Defenders? Cnames such as Christanaval and Gallas spring to mind. Then come their striker force who contrary to popular belief is now growing up. Anelka at the tender age of 21 definately has his best years ahead of him as does one of the true greats Thiery Henry. great players like Dabo and Zoumana Camara all under the age of 23 are available for France.

Don't be naive and think the French are not here for at least 20 years of dominance.

The only teams with such a talent pool are the afore mentioned ones....The Dutch Argies Brazileros and the Ities.

its up to these four teams to knock the French off their pedestal. two have already failed.

I just would like to add to iTazz's lists the following players:
Martin Djetou, a great young defender from Monaco believed to be the new Thuram.
Vincent Candela, the great Roma player who's one of the best Roman player if not the best with Totti is still a young man.
David Trezeguet, a fantastic forward who will convert any chance he gets in the box!Just ask the italians!:)
Sylvain Wiltord, another great young forward from Bordeaux extremely fast, at ease with the ball.
Stephane Dalmat, a wonderful talent in midfield
Peter Luccin, the jewel of the french football!A real diamond!
Robert Pires, a great player who can play with the greatest ease either on the wings or as a playmaker, a kind of French Figo!
Lassissi, the defender from Parma
Dabo, the great defender from PSG
Domoraud, another great defender from Inter
and a few mores to come in the future.
So the future of the French football is very bright!

The world will be...Bleu Blanc Rouge...again...and again!

Italy is not the best team in the world, but one of the best, France is also one of the best along with Argentina, Holland, Czech rep and maybe Brazil.
I see Argentina, Italy, Holland, France and Czech rep as the favourites for the wc2002.But after the 2002 wc i think France will no longer be a major trophy contender but will still be quite good, alot of their top defenders will be gone or very old. Their midfield will still be good but the mighty Zidane will be ageing too. Their attack will still be very good with Henry and all and will be so for a while to come. They have some good up and coming players like Dalmat, Micoud and others but can they compare to Pirlo, Baronio, Abiatti, Gattuso and the phenomenal Cassanno?

Just for your info, people another reason why France will be at the very top for at least 10-15 years! What one can say definitively is that France's future is well rosy!

Indeed after the first team's domination of the world football now the Junior team (under 18) has just won the European championship beating in the final Ukraine 1-0 in Nuremberg, Germany!

This is not a first time because France also won the Under 18 European Championships in 1983, in 1996 and 1997!

The future WILL BE BLEU BLANC ROUGE...AGAIN...AND AGAIN!

So need we say more who's the best team of the world???

ALLEZ LES MECS! VOUS ETES TOUS GENIAUX!

THE WORLD WILL BE...BLEU BLANC ROUGE...AGAIN...AND AGAIN...AND AGAIN!

SIMPLY THE VERY BEST OF THE UNIVERSE!

It depends on what we're talking about here: who is best HISTORICALLY or CURRENTLY.

Historically, the best team is Brazil not Italy, no doubt about it.

Currently, the best team is France on a result basis.
On a level of play basis it's a very tight one between France and Argentina. Close after these two come Italy and Holland. Brazil sucks at the moment.

To romulus :
"a descending parabola in the football scheme of things...At the national level, they've won nothing in the last hundred years until now..."
Are you sure you're watching football? Because if you do, how could you have missed the Euro 1984? Check your facts before posting crap.

I think that arguing over which team is the best in the world is a pretty pointless and endless argument. Currently France has won the most competitions but there are about 8 other teams which could easily beat them and they've all been mentioned in here. I think France along with these other 8 teams are the best teams of the world and all of them could beat each other on their day. Total domination was only shown in the past by Brazil in the late 50s and 60s, Italy in the 30s and Germany in the 70s and 80s. These three countries have the best PAST record with Argentina and France not far behind. If France manages to win the world cup for a 2nd time in a row then they too could start their own period of total domination.
