FLORENCE, Italy, May 15 (AFP) - The Italian World Cup team reached agreement on Wednesday on which player will wear which shirt number during the tournament in Japan and South Korea.

After three days of negotiations at the Coverciano training camp striker Francesco Totti, as expected, was given the number 10 awarded to the playmaker that both Brazil's Pele and Argentina's Diego Maradona wore in their heyday.

First-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon bags the number one jersey while veteran defender Paolo Maldini remains number three and Lazio's Alessandro Nesta has the unlucky 13 jersey but has worn it before.

Filippo Inzaghi pipped Christian Vieri to the number nine jersey traditionally worn by the star striker with Inter Milan's Vieri taking the number 21 he wore at the 1998 World Cup finals in France when he scored five goals.

AS Roma's Vincenzo Montella, who famously refused to hand over the number nine jersey to Argentinian Gabriel Batistuta when the latter joined the club, makes do with the number 20 but will be encouraged by the fact that that number has historic significance for Italy.

The number 20 was worn by Paolo Rossi in the 1982 World Cup-winning campaign when the striker scored six goals and won the golden boot as tournament top scorer.

Inter defender Marco Materazzi will wear the number 23 for the first tournament where teams been able to select 23 rather than 22 players.
