McCarthy sees gap widening

Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy believes the gulf between the top two divisions is widening after seeing his side beaten 3-0 by Everton in the FA Cup.
"This is the sort of thing we will have to compete against if we do get out of the Championship," he said after goals from James McFadden, James Beattie and Tim Cahill sent the Black Cats spinning out.
"I think it is worth remembering what these players have done already to get us into third spot in our own division, and have come from lower leagues.
"It is remarkable and I am full of admiration for them. If we do get promoted and we are lucky enough to be coming back to Goodison Park next season as a Premiership team, we will try to improve again.
"Playing against Everton in the cup can only help some of our younger and inexperienced players. If we do get up we will bring a few new faces in and try to compete.
"People keep talking about the gap between the Premiership and the Championship, and it is a gap. But we beat Crystal Palace to get to this stage, so it is not impossible for us to compete at this level."
