Ireland to play world champions Brazil
First Published: Jan 12, 2004

The Republic of Ireland will play World Cup holders Brazil in a friendly at Lansdowne Road on February 18, Football Association of Ireland chief executive Fran Rooney confirmed.

"We're delighted to be able to bring the world champions to Dublin in February following detailed discussions," said Rooney.

"It's a fantastic match to look forward to and kicks off the 2004 fixtures with the most attractive proposition in World soccer."

Rooney added that he expects Brazil to field a full-strength side, including Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos.

Another friendly in March in Dublin pitches Ireland against the Czech Republic, ranked 11th in the world, four places above Ireland.

These fixtures are part of a programme being put together by the FAI in advance of the World Cup qualifiers beginning later in the year.

Talks are currently underway to secure friendly games in April and May.

"We will have world-class players in abundance playing in Dublin over the coming months and very testing opponents for our squad", said Rooney.
