Round-up: Synot and Haka safely through

Sunday 30 June 2002

1. FC Synot of the Czech Republic beat Moldova's FC Constructorul-93 Cioburciu 4-0 to advance to the second round of the UEFA Intertoto Cup on Sunday.

No shock
After a goalless first leg the Moldovans were hoping to achieve a shock result but their hopes were dashed by four second-half goals as Synot booked a second-round meeting with Helsingborgs IF. The Republic of Ireland's Saint Patrick's Athletic FC did achieve an upset by beating Croatian side HNK Rijeka 1-0 to progress to the second round on away goals after the sides finished level at 3-3 on aggregate. Ugandan international Charles Mbabazi Livingstone's 22nd-minute goal was enough for the Irish side to secure a meeting with KAA Gent.

Haka to meet Fulham
FC Haka set up a potentially lucrative second-round tie with English FA Premiership side Fulham FC after a 1-1 draw at home to FK Obilic secured a 3-2 aggregate win. Peter Kovacs' 77th-minute equaliser for the Finnish side proved decisive after Nenad Mladenovic had given the visitors the lead.

Entertaining draw
CD Santa Clara also advanced to the second round after a highly entertaining 3-3 draw with Armenian side FC Shirak wrapped up a 5-3 aggregate win. Two goals in the first half hour from João Pedro put the Portuguese side on their way to victory but the Armenians gave themselves hope just before the break when Ararat Arutunian netted.

Pedro hat-trick
Pedro completed his hat-trick in the second half before late goals from Arutunian and Karen Aleksanian saw the game finish level, but it is Santa Clara who advance to the next round to face Czech Republic side FK Teplice. Finally a Zans Derjugins goal saw FC Dinaburg set up a showdown with Krylya Sovietov Samara as they beat Zaglebie Lubin 1-0 to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

Fulham V FC Haka Preview

Saturday 6th July 2002 will become a red letter day in the history of Fulham football club as they play their first ever competitive European game in the 95-year history of the West London side. It will also be their final game at Craven Cottage before the famous old stadium undergoes a facelift which will take around two years.

Okay, so it's `only` the InterToto Cup and the opponents are `only` Finnish part-timers Haka, however for a club who finished 17th in the THIRD division just six years ago, it's the culmination of a magnificent period in the history of Fulham.

Boss Jean Tigana will be quick to tell his players that they are still two rounds and four games away from the bright lights and glamorous surroundings of the UEFA Cup, however it can be done and Fulham will be aware that they have the quality to come very close to qualifying for Europe's second biggest club competition.

Haka's major claim to fame came last season when they found themselves up against Liverpool in a Champions League qualifier, but only after being beaten by Maccabi Haifi, who were then disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.

The fairytale ended for the Finns in spectacular style against Liverpool as they lost 9-1 on aggregate, however they can point to the fact that they have already eased through one round this season, beating Obliic 3-2 overall in the first round.

TEAM NEWS

Fulham could hand a debut to new signing Facundo Sava, whilst Chris Coleman could also feature for the first time since his horrendous car crash eighteen months ago. Lee Clark is still recovering from a calf injury, but otherwise Tigana has a full squad to select from, including the other new arrival, goalkeeper Martin Herrara. Steve Finnan may be rested however following his World Cup exertions with Ireland.

Haka's star striker, Valeri Popovitch, has reportedly stayed in Finland due to a morbid Bergkamp-style fear of flying, however Fulham will still need to be on their guard over giant forward Peter Kovacs.

POSSIBLE STARTING XI's

Fulham: Taylor, Brevett, Melville, Ouaddou, Coleman, Goldbaek, Legwinski, Davis, Malbranque, Marlet, Saha

Haka: Slawuta, Karjalainen, Pasoja, Ylfnen, Innanen, Ruhanen, Rantala, Kovacs, Pasanen, Okkonen, Kangaskorpi

Intertoto Cup Preview: Villarreal-FH Hafnarfjordur
Villarreal - Hafnarfjodur | News Archive

07/05/2002. Villarreal have sent out a signal that they mean business this season in the signings of Juliano Belletti, Rubén Reyes and Jose Reina. Belletti is Cafu's understudy for Brazil, so for a club of Villarreal's size to secure his services for the next five years is no mean feet.

Reina has done enough in his past two seasons at Barcelona to suggest that he can become a very good goalkeeper. He may not be as safe as houses on crosses, but his shot-stopping ability is rarely brought into question. Another astute signing.

Villarreal fans have spent much of the summer discussing the future of Martin Palermo. Will he stay or will he go? He was previously quoted as saying that he's keen to leave, although recent reports suggest that he's happy to remain at the club and is relishing the new Liga season. Villarreal desperately need his goals as without him they lacked a cutting edge last year. The expected push for a Uefa Cup place never materialised and Victor Munoz' men ended up in 15th place. If Palermo is to discover his ambition of playing in Europe this campaign his side are going to have to beat Icelandic part-timers FH Hafnarfjordur over two legs.

FH are in the second-round courtesy of a 4-3 aggregate victory over Macedonian side Cementarnica 55. They won the away leg 3-1 only to lose the return at home.

Torino kick-start Intertoto campaign Saturday 6 July, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Sunday evening Torino will start their assault on European football by taking on Austrian side Bregenz at the Stadio Comunale.

This is the Granata¡¦s first taste of the continent since the 1993-94 season, when Arsenal stopped the Bull in its tracks in the quarter-finals.

There is only one remaining player from that team in this squad, defender Daniele Delli Carri.

The three winners of the Intertoto Cup will qualify for the UEFA Cup, but the schedule to reach that objective is tight.

Torino must first beat Bregenz, then face the winners of Villareal-Hafnarfjordur before entering the semi-final and the final. There are three finals in this competition and three winners.

The Turin side enter the tournament in the second round, but Serie A representatives Perugia and Bologna make their debuts in the next games.

It is a European debut for Coach Giancarlo Camolese, who kept a shaky side in Serie A last season.

He plans to stick with his 3-5-2 formation, although new buy Vincenzo Sommese will start from the bench.

Bregenz are a contradictory side, earning seventh place in the Austrian League last season despite letting in 70 goals ¡V the second worst defence in the tournament.

Their danger man is Axel Lawaree, a Belgian hitman who netted 18 times during the last campaign.

Bregenz also have 24-year-old Jiri Rosicky, younger brother of Borussia Dortmund star Tomas Rosicky.

The first leg is in Turin¡¦s Stadio Comunale on Sunday at 5pm local time, while the return match is played in the Bregenz Casino-Stadion on July 14.

Probable line-ups:

Torino: Bucci; Delli Carri, Fattori, Galante; Comotto, Vergassola, De Ascentis, Scarchilli, Castellini; Lucarelli, Ferrante

Bregenz: Tolja; Ikanovic, Unger, Pircher; Eller, Rosicky, Mattle, Kulovits, Hlinka; Lawaree, Klausz

Intertoto Wrap: Troyes Cruise To Irish Victory
Coleraine - Troyes | News Archive

07/06/2002. French side Troyes snatched a 2-1 away win from their difficult trip to Coleraine. Mamadou Niang and Nicolas Gouss?scored to put the Championnat respresentatives in a comfy position ahead of the 12th July second leg.

Iceland amateurs Hafnarfjordur were no match for Primera Liga outfit Villarreal, who cruise to a 2-0 win. Some 8000 showed up to witness Victor and Galvan's first goals of the season.

In the night's other games, Portugal's Belensenses crashed to Croatian dark horses Slaven Belupo 2-0. Slaven caused similar damages to a string of high profile teams last year including Aston Villa.

Sochaux and Ghent had little trouble against Zalgiris and St Patrick's Athletic, whilst Zurich were given a few headaches by Estonian side Levadia. St Gallen, who ousted Chelsea from the UEFA Cup two years ago, fell to a 1-0 defeat against Willem II Tilburg of Holland.

InterToto Cup Report: Fulham Left Frustrated By FC Haka
Fulham - Haka | News Archive

Steve Marlet hit the bar for Fulham (Allsport)
07/06/2002. Fulham's hopes of UEFA Cup football this season has taken a severe dent after a goalless draw at home to Finnish part timers FC Haka in the first leg of their second round InterToto Cup clash.

Visiting goalkeeper Mikael Slawuta was the star of the show for the Finns, making a series of fine saves, leaving Fulham needing a better display or better slice of luck for the second leg.

The Premiership side took a while to find their feet against a team who came to defend deep and frustrate, as both John Collins and Sean Davis had efforts slightly off target in the opening half an hour.

Steve Marlet came as close as anyone when his delightful chip was tipped onto the bar by Slawuta and within minutes, Davis found space in the area, however with the keeper apparently wrong footed, he somehow thrust out a hand to deny the midfielder.

Steed Malbranque was controlling matters in the middle of the pitch, however it was hit shot that almost set up a debut goal for Facundo Sava, who came within inches of tapping into an empty net after the Frenchman's effort was again saved.

After the break, Haka almost caught Fulham cold when Peter Kovacs headed at Maik Taylor at the far post, however it transpired to be their only chance of the game as Fulham pressed forward continuously.

Louis Saha found himself clear only for Slawuta to block, whilst Davis had a shot deflected wide by his own player.

The hosts, playing their first game of the season compared to Haka who were playing their thirteenth, tired late on, although Ouaddou almost snatched a late winner only for his close range header to be kept out by the legs of the keeper.

Overall the crowd of almost 8,000 went home feeling deflated, and in truth we could see Fulham's European hopes end before they begin if they slip up in Finland next week.

Intertoto: Torino win opening tie Sunday 7 July, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Torino have made a victorious return to European football by beating Austrian side Bregenz 1-0 at the Stadio Comunale.

This second round first leg match was the Granata¡¦s debut in the Intertoto Cup. Their last foray onto the continent was the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1993-94.

The players had only just resumed training a fortnight ago and there was immediately an injury for Luigi Garzya, giving new buy Vincenzo Sommese his debut.

Mere moments later Torino were able to take the lead through veteran striker Marco Ferrante. The fan favourite did well to latch onto an Alessio Scarchilli free kick, although the goalkeeper was caught unprepared.

Cristiano Lucarelli¡¦s solo effort was deflected out for a corner and a later attempt brought a splendid save out of Tolja, while Ferrante saw his shot clip the near post.

Torino failed to capitalise on these many chances and towards the end of the match tiredness set in. Bregenz gave Luca Bucci a scare with a mis-hit Mehlem volley and impressive Hlinka header.

However, substitute Jose Franco wasted the best opportunity of the entire match, incredibly turning wide from less than two metres out.

¡§We did the best we could considering how early it is into our training programme,¡¨ commented Coach Giancarlo Camolese. ¡§A win always helps to boost morale and we hope to be in better condition next week.¡¨

The second leg will be played in Austria on Saturday July 13.

Torino 1-0 Bregenz

Ferrante 19

Torino: Bucci; Delli Carri, Fattori, Galante; Garzya (Sommese 18) (Franco 80), Vergassola, De Ascentis, Scarchilli (Mezzano 71), Castellini; Lucarelli, Ferrante

Bregenz: Tolja; Ikanovic, Unger (Geiger 35), Pircher; Eller, Rosicky, Kulovits, Hlinka, Mattle (Mehlem 77); Pedersen; Lawaree

Intertoto Cup: Sunday Wrap
Munchen 1860 - BATE Borisov | News Archive

07/07/2002. It was a mixed day for the two German teams in the Intertoto Cup, as VfB Stuttgart put themselves in good stead to advance with a 2-0 home victory over Belgian representatives Lokeren, while 1860 Munich have it all to do in Belarus in the return leg due to a 1-0 home loss to BATE Borisov. Jochen Seitz and Sean Dundee scored the goals that made the difference for VfB, while Kantsavy's 74th minute strike completed a highly successful roadtrip for BATE.

It was all smiles for the pair of Czech Republic teams in the competition on Sunday, as Teplice and FC Synot both won by emphatic four goal margins. FC Synot crushed Helsingborg 4-0 thanks to goals by Jiri Kowalik, Meduna, Jiri Kowalik and Vaclav Cincala, leaving the Swedish side with little but pride to play for in the second leg in a six days' time. Portuguese outfit Santa Clara never really stood a chance in their visit to Na Stinadlech, as they were humbled 5-1 by Teplice. Radek Divecky bagged a brace for the hosts, who also got goals from Gross, Leitner and Verbir. Fernando managed the lone response for Santa Clara.

Elsewhere in Intertoto Cup action from Sunday, Marco Ferrante banged home an Alessio Scarchilli cross in the 17th minute to give Italian side Torino a 1-0 lead to take into next Saturday's against SW Bregenz. (See full match report)

Dolan keeps his hopes alive

Monday 8th July 2002

St Patricks' Athletic manager Pat Dolan still feels his side can progress in the Intertoto Cup despite going down 2-0 to Ghent in Belgium.

"The tie is now very difficult but it is still alive," he declared.

The Republic of Ireland outfit go into Saturday's second round game without history on their side.

Before this season's Intertoto campaign, Pats had never won a European tie at home, losing six times in seven matches.

But Dolan hopes that the form Pats showed in the closing stages of Saturday's first leg will give them a chance.

Ghent went ahead through Alexnadros Kaklamanos in the first minute and the Greek then added a second to give the Belgians a good chance of setting up a meeting with Malaga.

"We restricted their scoring opportunities on Saturday, which is pleasing," Dolan told the Star.

"I'm proud of the efforts of my players and in the last 15 minutes we created the opportunities to score an away goal.

"It was a dreadful scoreline for that kind of performance but you pay the penalty for a lapse in concentration.

"Away from home in Europe I don't think that any team gets a 50/50 decision. But at the end of the day the referee doesn't win or lose games."

Pats will be without Ugandan star Charles Mbabazi Livingstone in the next game as he is suspended.

Fernandes calls for Santa Clara show of pride

Monday 8th July 2002

Santa Clara coach Manuel Fernandes has called on his side to restore pride when they face Teplice at the weekend following their 5-1 thrashing by the Czech side in the first leg of their second round Intertoto Cup tie on Sunday. "We won't give up," he said.

"Although it will be very difficult to get through to the next round we have to take advantage of our adversaries weaknesses.

"Above all we have to give a different image of our club and try to win the match by scoring some goals."

Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Azores club were undone by three goals in five minutes mid-way through the second half, Radek Divecky scoring on 65 and 68 minutes before Vladimir Leitner added the fourth two minutes later.

Fernando pulled one back for Santa Clara with eight minutes to go, but Pavel Verbir restored the Czech side's four-goal advantage soon after.

"We conceded three goals from set pieces proving that I was right when I warned my players to be wary of the height of our opponents," Fernandes added.

"They really imposed their strength in the air and we struggled to clear the ball out of our area."

"We controlled the match in the first half but the second goal finished us. The players lost their tactical positioning and that is fatal against a team with more international experience."

Intertoto Cup Preview: Bregenz-Torino
Bregenz - Torino | News Archive

Torino's striker Marco Ferrante
07/12/2002. BACKGROUND

The chance to keep on chasing a spot in the forthcoming Uefa Cup will be at stake on Saturday evening in Bregenz, where the home team and Torino will face each other in the second leg of the 2002/2003 Intertoto Cup second round.

A goal by experienced striker Marco Ferrante allowed the Granata to grab a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg match, which took place last Sunday in Turin. Despite struggling a bit on the physical side, the Granata managed to conquer an early lead that was never seriously threatened by Horgl's men, who played a good match but were expected to take more profit of their better shape (their domestic league started last Wednesday, while the Serie A is almost two months far from its first round).

In the first round, Bregenz eliminated Enosis Paralimni with a couple of quite comfortable wins (2-0 in Cyprus and 3-1 on their home ground), while Torino entered the Intertoto Cup directly in this second round. Most likely, the winner of this tie will face Villareal, who defeated 2-0 Iceland's team FH Hafnarjordur in the first leg match.

TEAM NEWS

No injury worries for Bregenz's coach Rainer Horgl, who is expected to field almost the same team of the Delle Alpi contest. The lone exception will be the comeback of powerful Czech striker Laszlo Klausz, who missed the Turin trip due to a muscular injury and will replace Pedersen in the starting eleven.

As for Torino, coach Giancarlo Camolese will also make one change compared to the first leg match. The bureaucratic problems which prevented him from fielding right wing-back Gianluca Comotto have been solved, and the former Vicenza player will surely be in the starting lineup. Two reserves, defender Garzja and striker Franco, will miss the game through muscular injuries.

PROBABLE STARTING XI's

BREGENZ (3-5-2) Tolja; Ikanovic, Unger, Pircher; Nzuzi, Kulovits, Rosicky, Hlinka, Mattle; Klausz, Lawaree

TORINO (3-5-2) Bucci; Delli Carri, Fattori, Galante; Comotto, Vergassola, Scarchilli, De Ascentis, Castellini; Lucarelli, Ferrante

Intertoto Cup Preview: FH Hafnarfjordur-Villarreal
Hafnarfjodur - Villarreal | News Archive

Victor was on target last week (Allsport)
07/12/2002. Villarreal will no doubt be delighted with their 2-0 win over Icelandic part-timers Hafnarfjordur last week and will be looking to finish the job off in the second-leg.

Around 8000 fans turned up for the match and their loyalty was rewarded with goals in each half from Victor and Galvan. The attendance was actually higher than for a league match against Real Sociedad last year! Surely a reflection of the optimism all around El Madrigal. On Villarreal's return to the top flight two years ago they took everyone by surprise and almost qualified for Europe. Last season, on the other hand, the harsh reality of Liga life struck home and the club finished a disappointing 15th. Now, however, there is the thought that the club have come through their rocky patch, and a couple more signings could be the difference between mid-table mediocrity and a push for Europe.

Perhaps one of those arrivals could be Juan Roman Riquelme. Barcelona's new signing looks set to be loaned out and Munoz' side would surely be interested in the player. After all, they were strongly linked when he was still at Boca Juniors just a few weeks ago. Barca won't want to loan the star to one of their rivals, so Villarreal could prove the perfect destination. Riquelme's former Boca team-mate Martin Palermo would surely have no complaints at the kind of silver service the playmaker is capable of providing.

Back to the game and coach Victor Munoz will surely stress to his players that the task is only half complete, although will surely be quietly confident inside. Anything less than a draw would be a big disappointment.
