International Friendly Preview: Greece-Switzerland
Greece - Switzerland | Latest News | News Archive

03/30/2004. On Wednesday night, two Euro 2004 qualifiers Greece and Switzerland face each other in friendly game as part of both countries preparations for this year's European Championship in Portugal from June 12 to July 4.

The game will be held in the island of Crete, at the brand new "Pancretan" stadium (in Greek: Pankritio) in Heraklion and Greece are looking to extend their unbeaten run into a record 15 internationals. However, Greece coach Otto Rehhagel has warned after the previous game not expect the same run this summer in Portugal.

"We are not a wonder team," the German had told reporters after the conformable 2-0 victory over fellow participants Bulgaria last month. "We have shown that we are able to beat stronger teams, and we will, as outsiders, attempt to do that in Portugal."

Otto Rehhagel will be without Inter midfielder Giorgos Karagounis who picked up an ankle injury last Thursday in the Uefa Cup game against Benfica and did not play last weekend.

The former Panathinaikos midfielder was assessed by the Greek national team's medical staff on Monday and returned to Italy.

Switzerland coach Jakob Kuhn will miss defender Murat Yakin and midfield players Johann Vogel and Christoph Spycker due to injuries, but has named two uncapped youngsters -Auxerre defender Stephane Grichting and Zurich forward Daniel Gygax- in his squad. He has also recalled Sochaux midfielder Johann Lonfant for the first time in almost two years to replace the injured Vogel.
