I've always wanted to start a game in the Brazilian league, but never gotten myself to actually do so. But I've finally decided to start one now. I don't know much about Brazilian football. And I definitley don't know how things work in the lower divisions, therefore this should be a great challenge.

I've decided to run only the Brazilian league, as my main objective of starting this game is to get to know the Brazilian league structure better, and play in the Brazilian league (only), therefore I did not see the need to start any other leagues, as that would be a distraction.

The team I chose (offcourse) plays in the Brazilian 3rd division. Its called Intercap, and apparently we will also compete in the Tocantins state Championship. Once again I have to be honest and I admit that I have no idea how these state championships works (but on the other hand, I can tell you how Italian Serie D works, and which teams might be in Serie C2 next year :D ).

Apparently we are in group 1 (out of 2 groups), and both groups includes teams from the third division and some non league teams. In other words, there are only teams on the same level as us in both groups. I belive its like that, because there are no big teams located in the Tocantins state. If I for example look at the Rio state championship, I will find a mixture of teams from the 3rd and 1st division. I guess these state champiohsips are like league cups, but since Brazil is such a big country with a diversty of teams that range from rich to very poor, they had to divide it into state championships. I have to appology to the Brazilians if I'm wrong, because like I said earlier I have no idea how (most of) Brazilian football works.

Anyway, we are also offcourse located in the 3rd division, which is apparently divided into 16 groups (probably based on the location of the teams, just like the state championships). We are in group 9. Most of the teams in that group looks stronger then us, and a couple of these teams even have 40 000+ capacity stadiums.

Here is an overview of Intercap:

As you can see the finances are actually not that bad, atleast not as bad as I first expected them to be, but on the other hand, the team has a 3500 (non seater) capacity stadium, which was actually the smallest stadium I found, when I was looking through teams to see which team I could manage.

This will definitiely make things harder for us, as other teams have alot bigger stadiums. As I have pointed out earlier, some of them even have 40K + stadiums. Also the reputation was obscure when I first took over, but it changed to Local for some strange reason.

I'm hoping the same. ;) Especially since I know next to nothing about the Brazilian lower divisions, it will be harder then it would have been, had I been managing a team in for example Italy.

ok ill kinda inform you of brazil, even though im going by the cm 01/02 way its done, i know the league structure has been changing in real life, so it maybe abit off....

but

state championships happen in jan - june i think cause your state is in two groups...it could mean divisions? or 2 groups leader of each playoff to decide winner

on cm01/02
div 3 had like 12 groups of about 5 teams, you play these teams twice and the top one from each group go into yet another league where the ones who are promted are decided...(if i rememebr rightly, check the moto clube thread, if you want some ickle vague information :)

Jawz, thanks for the info. :) And you are right, the state championships are played before the actual league matches. And the last thing you said about the top teams from each group in the 3rd division going into yet another league sounds good, as I was afraid that the season would last for only 7 months (March-October).

Btw, Moto Clube is trying to steal a veteran striker I'm trying to sign. :D He'll probably end up there, as he wasn't really interested in joining us.

We only have one goalkeeper at the club, but he looks decent. So do the rest of the players. But we only have 11 players contracted to the club, (and they all have part time contracts), so we definitley need some new players at the club. Perferably around 10. And atleast one of them has to be a keeper.

We also have only one coach, and one physio at the club. We don't need another physio (not while we are still in the 3rd division atleast), but we do need some new coaches.

After searching the market, I've realised the invitable, no decent players wants to move to Intercap. Well thats just great. But whats even worse, there are no scouts, choaches or assistant managers available on the market. The only available scouts I found were all English, and none of them wants to join us. Or there was this one Brazilian scout called Altafini, who had some really good attributes, but he is retiring, so he isn't interested in discussing terms.

The reason why I was searching for scouts is that they ask for alot less in weekly wage, and therefore I can offer them contracts as coaches and assistant managers, and keep the total wages low.

Ah, the joys of managing an obscure lower league club, you don't have to worry about missing out on good players, because no one wants to join your club anyway. :D

Another thing I've found out is that I can't loan players at the moment neither, since the Brazilian transfer window is probably not open at the moment. The starting date of the game was at the end of December 2003. There are no matches before March 2004, thats when the Tocantins state championship will start.

Btw, both the board and the fans have no expectations whatsoever, they expect me to invest in new players and start building for the future.

Without being able to buy any new players, the first match came up. It was a friendly at home against Tocantins, a non league team. Since I only have 11 players, I offcourse decided to utilise them all. The starting lineup looked like this (in a 4-1-3-2 system, because I don't have any attacking midfielders/forwards, I can't play the 4-4-2 diamond at the moment):

GK: Dede

DR: Suzao
DC: Daniel
DC: Tranco
DL: Luziram

DMC: Vivaldo (C)

MR: Vaca Magra
ML: Nene
MC: Ze Pedro

FC: Lourival
FC: Ivan

We got a corner at the start of the match, which lead to a penalty. Ze Pedro stepped up, and slotted it home quite easily. In the 37th minute, Vivaldo found Ze Pedro with a good pass, which sent Ze Pedro one on one with Tocantins' keeper. Ze Pedro didn't disappoint and scored once again. He showed some good finishing abilites there, especially when one consider that he is a defensive midfielder. Ivan and Nene scored one each in the 41st and 45th minute respectively. So we went to the half time break with a 4-0 lead.

Lourival scored a hattrick in the space of 11 minutes in the second half. And Ze Pedro completed his hattrick in the 82nd minute, before scoring another one on a penalty at the end of the match. So with that, the match ended with a 9-0 victory to us. I believe we won this heavily, not because the players at the club are better then I first thought they would be, but because Tocantins is one of the weakest non league teams. They have a 2500 capacity stadium, so they must be lousy. Because most other teams have around 10 000 capacity stadiums.

I used whole of January trying to sign different players on either loan or permanently, but most of my attempts failed, and at the end I only managed to sign 5 players:

Jeremias (AM/F R, Age 25, Brazilian) - signed for £20K from Sao Raimundo
Ricardo (GK, Age 35, Brazilian) - signed on a free transfer
Ze Mario (D C, Age 24, Brazilian) - signed for £3K from Friburguense
Paulo Paiva (D RL, Age 33, Brazilian) - signed for £3K from Olaria
Luizinho (AM RL, Age 22, Brazilian) - on loan from Sergipe for the rest of the season

All these are decent players, but none of them seems to be great. But atleast we now have 16 players at the club, and 2 goalkeepers. It seems to be alot harder to loan players in 03/04 then it was in CM4. Most of the offers do get accpted, but the players themselves usually rejects. Whats strange though is that even players from the same division as me rejected to come and play for us.

I managed to sign some new players in February, I didn't know that the transfer window wouldn't be closed at the end of January.

Fabio Costa (AM C, Age 24, Brazilian) - signed for £6K from Madureira
Wesley (AM RC, Age 21, Brazilian) - on loan from Gama for the rest of the season

We beat the non league team Arapongas 5-1 at home in the next friendly. And then we beat the 3rd division (Group 15) team Comercial 5-2, also at home.

Both our strikers (Ivan and Lourival) showed some good signs and scored several goals. Also the attacking midfielder Fabio Costa is proving to be a good buy. There is one problem though, as Ze Pedro has also been playing well in the same position. So we now have some competition for that one central midfield spot.

Ze Pedro can also play as the anchor, but Vivaldo as the team captain and midfield leader has been playing well there. But all this is definitley good for the team, and in the end thats all what matters.

We have 3 friendlies left to be played, before the season starts. I'm trying to sign some forwards/strikers, as we at the moment only have 2 strikers, and if anyone of them gets injured we could be in big trouble.

I've managed to sign two strikers:

Tainha (S C, Age 28, Brazilian) - signed for £9K from Comercial
Bruno Cozarine (S C, Age 21, Brazilian) - on loan from Moto Clube for the rest of the season

Tainha played against us in the last friendly, and he scored 2 goals, even if his team lost 5-2. He aslo has 15 in finishing so I decided to sign him. His wage demands weren't that bad neither, but he is the higherst earning player the club has at the moment, with a weekly wage of £150.

In the next friendly we played away against the 2nd division team Caxias. They took a 2-0 lead, and then two of our players were sent off, even resulting in one penalty to them. They scored another one before that penalty, and offcourse scored on the penalty to. So the half time result was 4-0 to them.

In the second half, we suffered some more, as they scored another 3. The end result was an embarassing 0-7 loss.

We played away against Campinense (3rd division team), and lost 3-4. But atleast we showed some good signs. And then we played the last friendly of the season, at home against the 2nd division team Brasiliense.

One of their players were sent off in the first half, and this made the match easier for us. We scored 6 times in the second half, to earn a good 6-0 victory over a 2nd division team.

They played with only 2 central defenders in the defence though, so that might explain why we managed to score so many goals. Vivaldo was sent off at the end of the match.

Tainha is showing some good signs, as he scored a hattrick in this match, and 2 goals in the previous one. Thats 5 goals in 3 friendlies, which is not bad at all.

The results in the friendlies:

Our first obligatory match of the season, was away against the non league team Atletico Tocantinense in the Tocantins state championship (Group 1).

Tainha missed a huge chance at the start of the match, and then Tocantinense got a penalty, which they offcourse scored on. Things would get better for us though, as we hit one back 8 minutes later, when Lourival played through Fabio Costa, who only had to tap in the ball.

Lourival continued to show his strength as he won a duel against two defenders, and then shot the ball into the net, to score our second goal of the day. Our lead didn't last for long though, as they scored only 6 minutes later, to make the score 2-2.

This didn't get us down, as Luziram advanced on the left wing, and played the ball to Tainha, who crossed it into the box, and who else then Lourival was there to head it into the net. Hopefully we could keep the lead this time.

In the 34th minute, Fabio Costa was played through by Suzao ,and he hit the post. Fabio Costa had another chance some minutes later, but his shot went over the bar. But we managed to score our fourth goal at the end of the first half, as left winger Luizinho found right winger Wesley, who struck the ball on a volley and the oppositions keeper didn't stand a chance to save that one.

We had some chances to score in the second half, but it was rather them who scored in the 72nd minute. 8 minutes later, Lourival won a header in the air, and Fabio Costa had an easy job of scoring our 5th of the day. This turned out to be the last goal of the match, and the end result was 5-3 to us.

Then we played at home against Santo Andre in the Brazilian Cups 2nd round. We got off to a great start, as Fabio Costa and Lourival scored one goal each in the space of the first 9 minutes of the game.

But our lead didn't last for long, as our defenders decided to make some elementary mistakes, and allow Santo Andre to score twice. And they continued their brilliant display by allowing Santo Andre to score another one in the 35th minute. Our defenders were playing really lousy, and I had seen enough. So I decided to make some changes in the 37th minute.

This turned out to be a bad move, as Vivaldo who came on a sub, was injured only ten minutes later. With all three subs used up, we had to play the second half with ten men.

By mere luck, Tainha managed to equalise, and we were in the game once again. This didn't last for long though, as Daniel decided to get his second yellow card. We were already down to 10 men, and now we had to play the rest of the second half with only 9 players on the pitch.

With only 9 players left on the field, I decied to play on the 3-3 result. As our defenders were too lousy to be able to keep on playing our current game. I pushed the wingers down to winbacks, and played one defensive and one attacking midfielder. Which meant that Lourival was more or less left completely alone on top.

This paid off, as Lourival scored on a rebound of his own header. After this Santo Andre threw everything they had into attack, and they even switched to a 2-3-5, and their keeper traveled to our box on a couple of corners, but we managed to keep them away, and take a very hard fought 4-3 victory.

We are ready for the 3rd round. We were even given £35K for making it to the 3rd round. Our current balance is £205,914. We have had a loss of £31K so far this season.

Our good run continued as we beat Tocantinopolis 3-0 away in the state championship, and then drew 1-1 in the Brazilian cups 3rd round against Uniao Barbarense (3rd division team). The match went to penalties, and we won 5-3. We will play against the Rio De Janeiro based Botafogo in the 4th round. Botafogo currently plays in the 2nd division. It will be an away match for us.

Anyway, after the cup match we played at home against the non league team Colinas in the state championship, and beat them 6-1. We have one more group match left to be played in the state championship.

Fabio Costa scored 4 of the goals in that match, and he has so far been our best player. In 5 matches he has scored 9 goals, and has an average rating of 9.40. He is also the team captain. Also keeper Dede, midfield anchor Ze Pedro and the strikers Lourival (7 goals in 5 matches) and Ivan has been playing really well.

Santos FC (a 3rd division club), wanted to know how much I wanted for Lourival. But since he is valued at £6K, I told them that he is not for sale. Especially not for that kind of money anyway.

Our match against Botafogo was next. Although Botafogo plays at the legendary Maracana stadium, they are not getting that many people to their home games. Their higest attedance (14696) for the season has been against Flamengo in the Rio state championship. Against a 3rd division club, they only drew around 2231 people. So it wouldn't have made any difference for us economically, had this match been played at our stadium. Atleast we would have had a good shot at going through to the next round, at home.

Surprisingly enough, it was we who created most of the chances at the start of the match, but Botafogo soon took over, and took the lead on a corner, in the 17th minute. 1-0 was also the half time result.

Botafogo kept the pressure, but 9 minutes into the second half, we produced a counter attack, which lead to Fabio Costa equalising when he was sent one on one with their keeper.

Botafogo produced some attacks, and got a couple of corners, but they lead to nothing. Instead we scored once again on a counter attack, and Fabio Costa was offcourse the goalscorer this time to.

Botafogo had some chances, but our keeper Dede kept firm and saved most of them. But he couldn't save everything and Botafogo equalised in the 85th minute. And the same player scored another one for them at the very end of the match.

The end result was 2-3, and we are out of the Brazilian Cup. But we were given £75K for making it this far, and this means that we have so far made a profit of £89K this season. The current balance is £326,863.

In the final group match of the state championship, we played against Interporto. They took the lead in the 9th minute, but Fabio Costa wanted it otherwise, and scored twice to give us a 2-1 lead.

But Interporto didn't give up, and scored yet again in the 63rd minute to equalise. But Fabio Costa wasn't content with a draw, and swung in a beautiful corner only 2 minutes later. Our centre back Daniel was there to head it in.

Interporto did score once more, but it was disallowed, and we took a 3-2 victory. I can't believe we got Fabio Costa for only £6K, what the hell were Madureira thinking. As group winners, we are ready for the play offs of the state championship.

The final group table looked like this:

Btw, it seems like I can't praise or criticise my players performance, as I can't release any press stories.

We will play against the title holders Palmas (3rd division team) in the 2nd round. But there are only 6 teams in the 2nd round, and 4 are supposed to advance to the semi finals.

I don't understand how they are going to do the math on this one. But I'm sure that as long as we win on aggregate we should be on the safe side. :D

The away leg ended 4-3 to us, after a hattrick by Fabio Costa, and a goal by Lourival. Fabio Costa has now scored 16 goals in 8 matches, thats 2 goals per match in average.

But Fabio Costa will not play the home leg, as he is suspended, after picking up 3 yellow cards so far. This is definitley a huge loss for us. I'm thinking of playing Ze Pedro in his position, as Ze Pedro had a couple of great matches in that position in the pre seasons friendlies.

I suppose you can only play as Intercap if you select all the Brazilian divisions during the game setup? I just went to see how they are doing in my game, but they were nowhere to be found. The only Brazilian divisions running in my game are the first two tiers of the national championship, and the top tiers of the Rio and São Paulo state championship.

Good progress, by the way. :)

We got off to the worse possible start in the home leg as Palmas scored already in the 8th minute. But fortunately for us, the debuting striker Bruno Cozarine equalised ten minutes later.

Ze Pedro was doing a lousy job, so I decided to take him off and play Wesley there instead. Palmas defender Wellington was sent off at the start of the second half, but they scored nevertheless in the 59th minute, to take the lead once again.

Moving Wesley into the center paid off, as he turned around in the box, and shot the ball into the net, in the 82nd minute. The end result was 2-2, and the result on aggregate was 6-5 to us.

We are through to the semi finals, and I still don't understand how they did the math to send Miracema to the semi finals.

Here are the final results, and as they show Palmas had a better goal difference of the loosing teams, and Miracema lost both legs, while Palmas drew in their away leg against us:

I have underlined the teams that went through to the semi finals. We will play against Atletico Tocantinense.
