Inter use Ronaldo bait for Beckham
By Ian Ladyman

EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United have conceded for the first time that they may soon have to put David Beckham up for sale.

The admission came as it emerged last night that Inter Milan have made an official enquiry and would meet the England captain's wage demand of £200,000-a-week to go to Italy.

United have also told Inter that any move for Beckham would hinge on Brazil striker Ronaldo coming into the deal - a possibility the Italians are prepared to consider.

Contract talks between United and Beckham have stalled after eight months and, while the club still hope he will sign a new deal, chief executive Peter Kenyon does not expect that to happen before the summer.

Kenyon said last night: 'I don't know what will happen, to be honest. But you do reach a point where you can't go any further. You conclude it one way or another and we both feel that is where we are getting to.'

Inter's interest surfaced after general manager Giuliano Terraneo made a secret visit to Manchester to sound out United and Beckham's agents.

Beckham's advisers said his wage demands were merely a starting point to negotiations and it is understood that, if he were to stay at Old Trafford, he would settle for less.

Ronaldo, 25, currently training with Inter in Majorca, is on his way back to full fitness after a knee injury which kept him out more than a year. He has scored three goals in 10 games this season.

If losing Ronaldo, who earns around £100,000-a-week, is the only way to get to Beckham, it is understood that Inter chairman Massimo Moratti would be prepared to consider the swap.

Ronaldo is also the biggest soccer client of Nike, who will take over from Umbro as United's kit suppliers next season.

Kenyon fears that Beckham will come back from this summer's World Cup Finals with only a year left on his contract and six months away from a Bosman free transfer.

United are also keen to tie captain Roy Keane to a new deal but Kenyon said: 'That is not something we have started to progress yet.'

Louis van Gaal, United's preferred choice to take over as manager from Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer, confirmed his interest in the job.

'There have not been any negotiations so far but I have heard that there is interest in me from United,' said the former Ajax and Barcelona manager, who finally stood aside as Holland coach yesterday.

'They are one of the top names in Europe and it would be a very appealing proposition. Any manager with ambition and belief in himself would love to work for a club as big as United and I certainly believe I belong in that category.'

Van Gaal's Dutchmen

You know what struck me as amusing, other than the absurd concept of swapping R9 for Beckham? Van Gaal in Man Utd.

I know, he's a competent coach; he did a great job in Ajax and a not-so-great job in Barcelona. But I have to wonder who will be the "former-Ajax" dutchmen he'll request to Manchester, once he's coach.

Davids, who's unsettled at Juve, is likely. Kluivert may get the boot at Nou Camp, though I fail to see where he would fit. Maybe Ronald De Boer - who might even get Beckham's place in the team, I suppose. Or would Scholes get that place more naturally? Does Manchester have an immediate reserve to take the wonder-boy's place?

I mean, if you consider Van Gaal's stint at Barcelona, Van Nistelrooj will be welcoming several countrymen next season.

Ronaldo "Nerazzurri Forever"

Ronaldo has pledged his future to Inter Milan - squashing speculation about a possible move to Manchester United. The Brazil forward, currently training with his team mates in Majorca, has been linked in the Italian press with a deal to United in exchange for David Beckham. But Ronaldo told Thursday's Corriere Dello Sport: "I will stay at Inter for life."

After recovering from two years out with knee injuries, Ronaldo is hoping to help Inter win their first Serie A championship since 1989. Currently leading the table by one point, he could play in Sunday's game against Venezia after a month out with a thigh strain.

He added: "We're first in the table and want to stay there. Inter must be aggressive and work for each other. It's great to be back training with the rest of the squad and you can see from my training that it proves my condition is good." (inter-online.com)

sounds crazy,I dont think Moratti will be that stupid.
Beckham wont be successful in italy, like most British.
In my opinion, his skill except his passing ball by right leg,is so poor.
I bet, if Beckham leaves Manchest United,he is to fail.

Guys Ronaldo is not going anywhere, atleast, until he wins scudetto with Inter. That could be this year or the next.He loves Inter and is being treated very well there.Moratti treats him like his son.And don't forget Pirelli has a lot of money invested on him.He is the reason I am an Inter fan and I hate Manu.
