Inter title bid knocked by Vieri and Ronaldo injuries

Tuesday 23 April 2002

Internazionale have seen injuries to Christian Vieri and Ronaldo hit their title run-in.

Inter lead Serie A by a point from Juventus and two points from defending champions with two games to play.

The Milan club are chasing their first title since 1989 and both strikers are suffering thigh strains making them doubtful for Sunday's home game with Piacenza.

Reserve strikers Nicola Ventola and Uruguayan Alvaro Recoba could both be fielded on Sunday if the top stars fail to recover from their strains and both are out of training at present.

Inter have also lost centre back Marco Materazzi to injury.

Vieri and Ronaldo ruled out? Tuesday 23 April, 2002

Inter’s Scudetto push took a massive blow as both their star strikers are in doubt for the final two games of the season.

Christian Vieri is recovering slower than expected from a minor thigh strain suffered in the 2-1 win over Brescia on April 14.

The Italian international missed out on last Sunday’s trip to Chievo and is unlikely to feature this week against Piacenza either.

Considering how close he is to the World Cup, it’s believed that Vieri may decide not to risk another relapse of the thigh problems that have dogged his career.

Ronaldo left the field early in the 2-2 draw at the Bentegodi Stadium and more tests will be needed to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Doctors fear that he may have suffered another muscular problem.

Out of action for almost two years, the Brazilian’s comeback has been littered with small but troublesome thigh strains due to his lack of match fitness.

Inter’s problems extend past their two injury-prone strikers. Marco Materazzi, Dario Simic, Nelson Vivas and Michele Serena are all out of action.

Inter should just sell him already, maybe Vieri too. You can get a lot for them and as great as they are when they're healthy, neither are healthy for a long enough time it seems.

Inter's been very patient with Ronaldo, not that it's his fault he gets injured so much but enough is enough. At least that's how I would look at it if it was my decision to make.
