Serie A Week 31 - 25/4/04 (15.00)
Inter - Lazio
LIVE on British Eurosport (KO 2pm UK time)
San Siro

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter took over that fourth Champions’ League qualifying place last week, but immediately face a head to head battle to keep hold of it.

The Nerazzurri’s last remaining objective for the season is to reach Europe’s most prestigious competition, but they have struggled to maintain consistency. Last week’s 4-2 victory over Bologna enabled them to leapfrog past Parma into that precious spot, but it was marred by a very public falling out between Christian Vieri and Coach Alberto Zaccheroni.

It is highly unlikely that the striker will be forgiven for refusing to sit on the bench and he could well be shelved again in favour of the more effective trident attack of Dejan Stankovic, Adriano and Obafemi Martins. Alvaro Recoba started Sunday’s game, but is ruled out with a minor calf strain. Former Lazio player Marco Materazzi also returns to the defence after an injury setback.

When these two teams met in December it was Lazio who emerged with a 2-1 victory and their last two trips to the San Siro have ended with a share of the points. There are major injury worries in the Capital as Cesar is definitely ruled out, while Jaap Stam is doubtful after limping off with a thigh strain during their hard-fought 4-2 win over Ancona. It has been a tough week for the Biancocelesti as the Rome derby on Wednesday will take a lot of energy out of these players.

It will be a particularly special occasion for several men, as Angelo Peruzzi, Bernardo Corradi and Dejan Stankovic are facing their former clubs. Perhaps even more intriguing is that Roberto Mancini replaced Alberto Zaccheroni on the Lazio bench and is heavily tipped to repeat the trick at Inter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter (probable): Toldo; Cordoba, Materazzi, Cannavaro; Helveg, J Zanetti, Farinos, Kily Gonzalez; Stankovic; Adriano, Martins

Lazio (probable): Peruzzi; Oddo, Couto, Mihajlovic, Favalli; Fiore, Liverani, Giannichedda, Zauri; Lopez, Corradi

Question, guys. :) Will Stam be avaliable for this game??? I think he missed the Rome Derby. Was he suspended/injured or just rested??? Thanx. :)
He is injured and it is unknown whether he will take part in the game.
EDIT: About the game itself - of course it's crucial and the tradition is strongly on our side. If Stam returns I think we should get at least a draw unless Zac's luck of the idiot interferes. If not it becomes complicated, especially if Couto is injured seriously too, we will have only one healthy central defender - Miha, plus Inter's attack has a lot of speed. Another problem is who is to parner GG in the centre of midfield - Albertini is both tired and not too convincing while I have not seen Dabo lately but apparently he is not in a very good form either. Maybe it would be Fiore with someone from the attackers taking over the right wing but it would be a huge gamble. Talking about right wing, it could be vital for the outcome of the game - Inter have problems in the right side of their defence and if Fiore and Oddo could exploit that well it would be great for Lazio. I thnik we must press them very hard, not allowing a lot of good passes to reach the Inter strikers and if we take the lead to continue to attack not stand back and defend like yesterday.

Well if Stam and Couto are out, along with Negro of course, then i reccomend this line-up for Lazio :

--------------------Peruzzi------------

--Oddo---Colonnese----Miha-----Favalli---

Fiore--Dabo--Giannichedda--Albertini--Zauri

---------------------Corradi--------------

3 Strong DMs would be crucial and would control the tempo of the game for Lazio. Plus, you got to have a wall infront of Colonnese and Mihajlovic, it won't be easy for both of them. If Stam is fit then back to the 4-4-2. What do you think ?

I'd rather see Zauri as a CB than Colonnese and Lopez could take the left wing.

But thanks for the heads up anyway. I'll be watching. :)
Hey Lazio amigos.....Hola

If you really want to see the game for free go to the Inter forum and you'll find it in our Lazio-Inter thread. I'm too lazy to go and paste it here.

Corradi to conquer San Siro Friday 23 April, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bernardo Corradi faces his former club this Sunday and claims Lazio will go to the San Siro looking for a victory.

“This team cannot just sit back and hope to sneak a win,” warned the hitman. “We need to play well if we are to beat our opponents, so we’ll try to impose our style of football on Inter.”

This is a head to head clash for that fourth Champions’ League qualifying spot and comes just days after the 1-1 draw in the Rome derby.

“Scoring in that game was just wonderful,” explained Corradi. “I really cannot describe the emotions you feel at that moment. I wanted to do a million things, but just spontaneously found myself showing the Lazio jersey to the crowd.”

That result put Roberto Mancini’s men just one point adrift of Inter and a win in Milan will leapfrog them back into fourth.

Lazio have an excellent record against the Nerazzurri and have not lost here since 1993, earning three wins and nine draws.

“The fans really do love us,” added the former Inter striker, “because they have understood that despite a thousand obstacles we have given our heart and soul to get results.”

The former Chievo man never really got a chance to prove his worth at the San Siro, as he was almost immediately shipped out as part of the Hernan Crespo deal.

Mancini faces his future Sunday 25 April, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The result of today’s San Siro showdown could decide Roberto Mancini’s future – with Lazio in Europe or taking over at Inter?

“I am not thinking about anything except earning that fourth Champions’ League spot for the Biancocelesti,” assured the sought-after tactician.

“This will be a very special game for all concerned, as there are three teams divided by just one point. It will be a battle until the final day, but if we lose here then it will be almost impossible for us to win this race.”

Parma are also ready to pounce on that precious Euro qualifying spot if the points are shared, but Lazio are boosted by the fact they haven’t lost here since 1993.

“Inter are a great side with potentially the best strike force in the world,” noted Mancini. “We cannot think of going there and letting them set the tempo. Lazio must play its brand of football and take the game to them.”

Looking at the statistics could boost the Capital club, as Inter have never won a game in which they started with both Christian Vieri and Adriano.

“These two strikers are both left-footed and therefore tend to gravitate towards the same area of the field, but in football two talented players can always co-exist.”

Mancini is forced to do without the suspended Paolo Negro and Fabio Liverani, while Cesar is not expected to feature after suffering a muscular problem.

The Coach was furious following the 1-1 draw with Roma midweek, claiming that the decisive penalty was harshly awarded.

“We must not think about these things anymore,” warned Mancio. “We risk letting our attitude become tarnished by what has been taken away from us this season.”

Lazio squad: Albertini, Casazza, Cesar, Colonnese, Corradi, Couto, Dabo, Favalli, Fiore, Giannichedda, Inzaghi, Lopez, Mihajlovic, Muzzi, Oddo, Peruzzi, Sereni, Stam, Zauri.

Serie A Preview: Inter-Lazio
Inter - Lazio | Latest News | Match Preview | News Archive

Stankovic faces his old club (AFP)
04/24/2004. Background

How things change for Alberto Zaccheroni's Inter Milan.

One minute we are writing them off for wasting their opportunities, achieving poor results and plummeting down the table.

Then it becomes clear that they can play.

And so we are praising them for making the most of their chances, stringing together a series of wins and getting back into contention for a spot in next season's Champions League.

Through all of this there is one certainty: Inter have made their fans suffer over the last eight months.

But with four rounds to go, few of these tifosi could say that it has not been worth the heartache and pain.

For Inter have proven to them that they are well and truly capable of mixing it with the best teams in Serie A.

That is not to say that they are going to take their clash with Roberto Mancini's Lazio lightly at the San Siro Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

They know that coach Mancini's outfit, though hit by injuries and suspensions, are in excellent form.

And they expect them to offer stiff opposition in the battle for fourth place.

Latest News

Inter
Getting back into top-flight football after serving a two-month suspension, Materazzi showed that he is still on the ball.

He watched Lazio play Fabio Capello's Roma midweek and was impressed by the way the biancoceleste handled the giallorossi.

"They were very good," he said.

It remains to be seen how they will go against the resurgent nerazurri, though.

The club have not looked for alibis during the rough times and have done well to lift themselves back up the table.

How far they can go is up to the players.

And if Materazzi is anyone to go by, then they should secure fourth spot.

"We are going to play each of the remaining games as if they were World Cup finals," he said.

Lazio
Mancini was deeply disappointed after his side drew 1-1 with Roma in the replay of the derby a few days ago.

He said the refereeing for the clash was inconsistent.

This comment stemmed from Rosetti failing to punish Roma for handling the ball in the area, but awarding a penalty against Lazio when they committed the same offence.

"They need to give penalties every time someone handles the ball," Mancini said.

If erratic decision-making by the referee was not enough to upset the coach, then news the day after of players set to miss this Sunday's clash through injuries and suspensions did the trick.

Mancini will have to do without Couto and Stam, who are injured.

And he will have to find replacements for Liverani and Negri, who are suspended.

Probable Team Line-Ups

Inter (3-4-1-2)
Toldo, Cordoba, Materazzi, Cannavaro, Helveg, J. Zanetti, Farinos, Kily Gonzalez, Stankovic, Adriano, Vieri.

Lazio (4-4-2)
Peruzzi, Oddo, Favali, Mihajlovic, Zauri, Fiore, Albertini, Giannichedda, Lopez, Corradi, Muzzi.

Players To Watch

Inter
No one has given gossips a better topic of conversation than Vieri after his petulant refusal to start on the bench against Bologna last week.

The powerful forward's relationship with Inter is mysterious.

His efforts on the field suggest a dedication to their cause, his words to the press state otherwise.

Either way, Vieri is striker who will induce fear in Lazio's most seasoned defenders.

Lazio
With Peruzzi in goal things look good.

This stocky custodian has a style of blocking shots that is all his own.

And the aim for him will be to stop Adriano and Vieri by any means possible.

Serie A Prediction: Inter-Lazio
Inter - Lazio | Latest News | Our Prediction | News Archive

04/24/2004. Alberto Zaccheroni, something of a beleaguered manager, will earn some breathing space when his Inter Milan account for Roberto Mancini's Lazio on Sunday afternoon at the San Siro Stadium.

Probable lineup:

-------------- Peruzzi
- Oddo - Stam - Miha - Favalli
Fiore - Albertini - Giannichedda - Zauri
---------- Corradi - Lopez

I like it. We could surely use Cesar but Zauri has been good lately so I have faith in him. Cesar is on the bench so he could come on if we need it.

The lineup looks good although Fiore could be moved to the center (where he has been playing better in the last months than on the right) with Oddo taking the right wing while Stam takes the RB. But Couto and Miha in the center would be a bit risky. Fatigue is going to be a major factor in this game, I hope our players have left something in the tank and can play the whole game at high level.
I am so damn nervous and the stupid local TV will show the game after the end of the crappy Formula 1 race. I just feel the massive pressure of this game.

First half was more for Lazio than for Inter, although Inter was dangerous from a couple of freekicks and Stankovic hit the post early in the game. Peruzzi made some great saves, keeping out a beautiful shot by Adriano that was sure to go in. Lopez had some great changes, first hitting the post than he just hit over the bar from close range and later on missed the goal by mere inches when he broke away on a counter. Stam and Miha are very solid in the defense. But Fiore hasn't shown much, he seems to have trouble adapting to his position on the field. All in all a good first half.

Btw, the link to the match is working fine! So be sure to tune in there!
