TURIN, Italy, May 5 (AFP)

Fans of Turin club Juventus were Sunday celebrating their club's unexpected triumph in the Italian first division title race with a vast street party in the northern city. But Juve, whose fan base stretches far beyond their home city, were also being feted all over Italy, even in Milan where arch-rivals Inter were coming to terms with the 4-2 defeat by Lazio which cost them the title. Naturally it was Turin that took centre stage with thousands thronging the central Piazza San Carlo where a victory party was getting underway. Clad in the club's black and white colours Juve fans were celebrating the club's first victory since the 1997-8 season. Turin's mayor Sergio Chiamparino said: "As mayor I am pleased that the Scudetto is returning to Turin. Juve deserved it." But the scenes were being repeated all over Italy. Juve boast they are the best supported club in 11 of the country's 18 regions and the second-best supported in the other seven. At Palero, Sicily several thousand 'Juventini' were celebrating while similar scenes were repeated across the island at Catania. But there were reports of fighting in Rome as Inter fans clashed with Rome-based Juve fans while Juventus fans driving through Milan had their cars attacked by Inter supporters. Even in Milan - where Inter and AC Milan are based - Juventus claim to be the second-best supported club after Inter. AC Milan fans were also celebrating the demise of their arch-rivals while Milan's central Piazza Duomo quickly emptied as it became clear there would be no victory party. Inter fans had prepared a mock funeral for an imitation zebra (the emblem of Juve) and a wolf (symbol of Roma) but in the end could only toast their own misfortunes.
