Internazionale officials clinched the signature of striker Hakan Sukur after Italy's 2-1 victory over Turkey on Sunday.

They travelled to Delden, current camp of the Turkish Euro 2000 squad, to talk with the 29-year-old, who played five games in Serie A for Torino in 1995 before getting homesick.

But now, after a marvellous season with Galatasaray during which he helped steer the Istanbul club to Uefa Cup glory, the forward is ready for a new opportunity.

Inter see Sukur, who has signed a three-year deal worth £4.9 million, as an alternative to their injury-prone forward line of Chistian Vieri and Ronaldo.

The prolific hitman is out of contract with Galatasaray and so all that is left to be resolved is a 'token' transfer fee, thought to be in the region of £4 million.

The San Siro club are also looking to South America and were hoping to make an offer to Velez Sarsfeld for Sebastian Mendez.

But the 23-year-old Argentine defender has a pelvic injury and Inter will wait to see how he recovers before tabling an official bid.
