Inter Milan have made an astonishing £31m bid for Paul Scholes. The offer was made to United chiefs last week and has sparked a huge internal battle at Man Utd.

The board of the plc have been tempted to take the money, matched only by the £31m paid by Inter for Christian Vieiri, believing it makes sound business sense. But manager Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant he does not want to lose one of his best players.

Inter have confirmed that they are interested in signing Manchester United's England international Paul Scholes, having been linked with a £31 million bid for the player.

United moved quickly on Monday to reassure their legion of fans that they were not interested in selling their star midfielder, even for the kind of record-breaking transfer fee that the Serie A side were offering.

"Yes it is true. The story is correct," Inter president Massimo Moratti told English newspaper The Mirror. "We are very much interested in signing Paul Scholes."

However, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he is determined not to break up the squad that ran-away with the Premiership title last season, and is focussed on building a team that can, once again, dominate in Europe next season.

"Unfortunately for us, it appears Manchester United are not prepared to release Scholes at the moment," added Moratti. "It is going to be very hard for us to get him."

The Italian giants are believed to be ready with a wage deal of around £60,000 a week for the 25-year-old, should they manage to tempt United into releasing the player.

We all know that Moratti spends easily and some time not wisely but i don't think that he would be so STUPID!!!
For that amount he can get a REAL champion and not just a wannabe!
