Manchester United's Plc board have backed their manager Sir Alex Ferguson by telling Inter Milan that £31m will not buy Paul Scholes.
Inter president Massimo Moratti had hoped to test the resolve of the Old Trafford money men by tabling a world-record equalling offer.

But Fergie is adamant that Scholes should not be allowed to leave the club, and the board have flatly refused to do business with the Serie A giants.

Moratti acknowledged today that he had made an approach for the England midfielder, saying: "Yes, it's true. The story is correct. We are very much interested in signing Paul Scholes."

Milan are reportedly ready to double Scholes' United salary, but Moratti admitted: "Unfortunately for us it appears Manchester United are not prepared to release Scholes at the moment. It is going to be very hard for us to get him."
