The recent european games have once again shown that Italian football is struggling and has surely fallen way behind EPL. It is sad to see such a great footballing nation reduced to this.

A summary of what's wrong in Italian football:
- Low attendances/poor atmosphere: If the fans don't care why should the players work hard. Plus morale of the players go down.

- Slow paced: Your can't beat English teams if you play as if you are strolling in the park on a sunday. They will boss you around for 90 minutes

- The refs blow the whistle far too much: Players tend to think every little push is a foul. Obviously this works during Serie A games. In europe teams will capitalise on this and make fast counters when people are standing there waiting for the ref to blow the whistle.

This cannot be good:
Arsenal 1 - 0 AS Roma
Inter Milan 0 - 0 Manchester U.
Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus
AC Milan 2 - 2 Werder Bremen
Udinese 2 - 1 Lech Poznan
Ajax Amsterdam 1 - 1 Fiorentina

Only one win against Lech Poznan:eek:

Please give us your brilliant ideas to help this once super power of world football bounce back.

I think those are also good points. There has been something of a cultural decay of football in Italy that has resulted in decreased attendance. Several years ago, Serie A attendance exceeded that of the EPL.
To get rid of Berlusconi and Moratti just like what happened to Moggi would be a good start.
What's wrong with Moratti?

so you are saying the only credible big teams that can actually challange in Europe, from Italy, should be relegated?..left with Roma...and Fiorentina?...and oh, Juventus??

maybe cause they are paid? There are players/teams/clubs who have regularly disappointed the supporters in spite of the constant warm support.

that may surely be true, but I watched just one CL game, Chelsea-Juventus, and Juventus were not outpaced.

This is surely true.

You forgot Sampdoria who lost as well. :D
Anyway, the UEFA Cup is not exactly an English affaire either.

The way many teams, not just Italian, play is nothing else than an improved form of catenaccio, maybe slightly different, but with the same spirit.

You could also go hard in for the FIFA 2018 comp. It wouldnt be a instant cure and in shorter term wouldnt solve anything but it should direct a decent amount of money into improving your stadiums which in Italy is becoming more and more something of a problem child. The overall good level of stadiums would improve the image.

You don't necessarily have to match your opponent's pace, Inter would have done much better that night if they had players who could hold the ball & play, sadly there was only Cambiasso who could do that to an extent. A Milan side of 3-4 years back would have taught United a lesson by slowing down the game. So being outpaced is not an issue.

And the 2nd legs still remain, I am eager to see what Chelsea & Arsenal do in Italy. Inter's chances are not finished either.

However, the infrastructure & sponsorship issues are relevant ones. Italian football needs a revamp so far as stadiums are concerned.

Get some money in.
A couple of Arab billionaires would help, especially the mid-table clubs such as Fiorentina, Sampdoria etc...where money can be spent on attracting big names players like Manchester City.

Italy seems to possess it all...weather, passion, rich footballing history, good stadiums etc...just needs that extra bit of cash to compete with EPL.

No I mean the genuine, old style. Strict positions and roles, maybe like Bearzot's "zona mista". 1 libero, 1 terzino fluidificante, 1 ala etc etc...strict man-marking. Italians know this football and do it better than anyone.

Oh they will definitely bounce back because they will be raking in the cash when they sell their future TV rights. It would also put the EPL's TV rights income to shame.

BBC said:
Who gets the most TV cash? This is a tricky one to assess because Serie A and the Premier League conduct their broadcasting deals differently.

The Premier League sells its TV rights as a collective then divides the revenues between the 20 teams.

The clubs occupying the Premier League during the 2007/2008 season received a guaranteed £22.8m from TV revenue.

On top of that clubs were paid prize money relative to their final position in the league and, if that was not enough, the 20 clubs received income from the live matches in which they were featured.

Unsurprisingly, title winners Manchester United came out on top with £49.3m.

Since 2007, Serie A clubs have been handed the responsibility to sell their own broadcasting rights to designated channels in their own country - and it's difficult to obtain details of the deals made by the top clubs.

However, by 2010, Italy's top league will revert back to collective selling.

Forty percent of the TV revenue will go to all Serie A clubs, while 30% will be based on final-table standing and 30% on fan following, both on a sliding scale.

It is projected that a package worth 900m euros (£798m) a season would mean a club like Juventus could rake in roughly 87m euros a year (£77m) - which would dwarf United's current TV income.

The passion is the wrong type of passion. Some people say that the fans in England are not as "passionate" as the ultras of other leagues, but in terms of both matchday revenue and atmosphere it's better to have 80k fans with a mix of casual and hardcore fans show up than just 20k fans that are mostly hardcore.

And the stadiums in Italy are all outdated, reducing the appeal of attending live games. The transition to new stadiums have been slow. Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, and England all have better stadiums than Italy.
