SOCCER: Zico calls up Kubo

Yokohama F Marinos striker Tatsuhiko Kubo has been recalled to the national squad after being kicked off the squad for one game for his role in an after-curfew drinking party.

Kubo was named to the 23-strong squad Thursday by national coach Zico for this month's two-match tour of eastern Europe, where Japan will play Hungary and the Czech Republic.

The 27-year-old center forward was one of eight players booted from the squad for being involved in a drinking binge and unruly behavior in a restaurant in February.

"I don't have any negative feelings toward those eight players,'' Zico said. "As far as I'm concerned, the incident is closed.''

Kubo was the only one of the eight called up. Two others, defender Teruyuki Moniwa and striker Yoshito Okubo, will be with the Olympic team for two matches in Greece at the same time, but Zico overlooked Urawa Reds right-back Nobuhisa Yamada and Kashima Antlers playmaker Mitsuo Ogasawara.

"I have a hunch that the 23 players I've picked are the best for the job,'' added Zico.

The squad:

Goalkeepers: Yoichi Doi (F.C. Tokyo), Seigo Narazaki (Nagoya Grampus Eight), Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi (FC Nordsjaelland, Denmark).

Defenders: Atsuhiro Miura (Tokyo Verdy 1969), Tsuneyasu Miyamoto (Gamba Osaka), Alessandro Santos (Urawa Reds), Yuji Nakazawa (Yokohama F Marinos), Keisuke Tsuboi (Urawa Reds), Akira Kaji (F.C. Tokyo), Mitsuru Nagata (Kashiwa Reysol).

Midfielders: Toshiya Fujita (Jubilo Iwata), Takashi Fukunishi (Jubilo Iwata), Hidetoshi Nakata (Bologna, Italy), Shunsuke Nakamura (Reggina, Italy), Junichi Inamoto (Fulham, England), Shinji Ono (Feyenoord, Netherlands), Yasuhito Endo (Gamba Osaka), Norihiro Nishi (Jubilo Iwata).

Forwards: Atsushi Yanagisawa (Sampdoria, Italy), Naohiro Takahara (Hamburg, Germany), Tatsuhiko Kubo (Yokohama F Marinos), Masashi Motoyama (Kashima Antlers), Keiji Tamada (Kashiwa Reysol).
