I've notice that Roy's been favored over Tim in your last patch of matches, is there a certain reason for that?

Howard was suffering badly from his Tourrett's Syndrome and Fergie though he needed a break as it had been almost 2 yrs since he had some time off

He started for us today. I was a bit shocked with that coz I thought Fergie had decided that he wasnt gonna start for us for the rest of the season.

Roy had been playing instead of Howard, because he's a far better keeper than Flapper Howard.

Doc - if you haven't got anything constructive to say then don't say anything at all. Howard is a much better keeper than Carroll will ever be - but he needed a break.

Who is Dedek???

If you mean Dudek, he hasn't made a mistake all seasons. He's been flawless.

Pav: Flapper Howard is crap, he's one of the worst keepers in the league.

big deal - I mistyped. He made plenty of f***-ups the past two seasons to make up for this one!

Dudek, flawless???? Doc, 2 words spring to mind......Diego Forlan!

Howard is still very young, and remember, this is his first feason in the EPL, wich is a massive step up from where he was playing last year.....he has had a few soft goals, but no major howlers.

He shu be our number 1 next season, no doubt about that.

Doc you are entitled to your opinion on Howard - I won't be tempted into any anti-Liverpool comments before Saturday's game as it would be tempting fate !!!

Reds benefit from keeper battle

UNITED'S FA Cup final goalkeeper's job is in safe hands no matter who wins Sir Alex Ferguson's vote on May 22.

The 1968 European Cup winning No 1, Alex Stepney, who won the FA Cup in `77 with the Reds, believes the United boss has managed the `keeper rivalry at Old Trafford to perfection.

Tim Howard's quest to become the first American to win the trophy is back on track with threequarters of his debut season backing his claims.

Challenger Roy Carroll has his semi- final form against Arsenal that helped the Reds to Cardiff endorsing his hopes.

Fergie has declared both will have matches in which to slug it out for the gloves against Millwall.

Howard returned against Charlton on Tuesday following his six-game breather and is set for another Old Trafford opportunity against Liverpool tomorrow.

But whatever Ferguson's final decision Stepney believes United can't lose.

"I think there is one thing certain now and that is that United won't have a worry about the goalkeeping position in the final," he said.

"I think we have seen from both Howard and Carroll this season, and in recent matches, that both have the credentials to be a solid last line.

"It will be a tough one to call but it is not an awful decision for Alex. It's awful for Tim or Roy depending on who misses out, but for Alex and United it is a great position.

"He now knows no matter who is chooses it won't be a problem. Last month it may have been a different matter. Then he had Tim needing a break and also not knowing how Roy would react.

"Tim was impeccable on his return against Charlton and looks fresh again and Roy has proved his capabilities again."

Howard had played 38 of United's 43 senior matches this term before the Champions League last 16 KO at Old Trafford against Porto, and the 4-1 derby defeat at Eastlands forced Fergie to rest him from the firing line.

"The manager's timing was perfect," says Stepney. "Tim was obviously ready for a rest. I would have been surprised if he'd been able to go through a debut season in England without some dip along the way.

"He had been absolutely fantastic and along with other United ex-goalkeepers we'd all praised him but I think we all harboured the concern that coming from America into such a high profile league as the Premiership, and at a club like United, might catch up with him.

"He may have been disappointed that he didn't make the semi-final and the Arsenal league match at Highbury but looking back he'll view it as the decision that has given him a chance of playing in the cup final.

"If he was suffering and the manager had let it go on, then he may not have recovered in time to be up for selection. The way Alex did it has meant he's got a breather and now has another opportunity to show he's ready.

"The manager won't forget the things Tim has done this season. He won't forget the save he made against Joey Barton at Old Trafford in the cup match against City. Neither will the boss overlook Roy Carroll's saves in the early minutes of the Villa Park semi.

"Prior to last month, Roy was probably thinking he wouldn't get a chance. Now he has. Tim was probably wondering if he'd run out of steam at the wrong moment but now he's had the chance to prove he hasn't.

"Neither can complain that they haven't had an opportunity. It has been handled just right. The bonus being that United will have a top class in-form goalkeeper behind their defence against Millwall.

"I don't know who it is going to be and I don't envy Fergie having to make the decision, but United won't suffer.

"He had to make that tough decision in 1990 when he dropped Jim Leighton for the FA Cup final replay and it proved to be the right one. I am sure he'll get it right again."

I think Carroll has had a few good games lately, but I have seen him in matches where he didnt look so good.

Howard on the other hand is quite good on a fairly regular basis. I think Howard should be our number 1 as he is far more consistent than Carroll.

It is good to have a rivalry like this, but I wouldnt give the number 1 goalie position to Carroll. He is a good back up goalie.
