We are ready to lose one spot in Europe thanks to the UEFA coefficient system.

The problem is not the coefficient system- the system is fair.

The problem is the performances of Italian teams in Europe. Of the teams that somehow are miraculously alive in Europe, you think they have any hope?

Heck no. Let's face it, Inter is screwed. Milan- what's there to say other than they are facing Manchester United at home? The same team that toyed with them in San Siro in the second half.

Who else is left- Juve. In the Europa League. :howler:

Truth be told, I hope they win. They are playing against Fulham after all. :cap:

But this is a problem that has gone on for a long time. What exactly is the problem?

-Is it the Italian mentality?
-Is Italian-style tactics only successful in Italy and worthless outside?
-Is there too much financial pressure on Italian teams?
-Is the revenue from Europe not worth it?
-Is it stadiums?

What's the problem here? We won the World Cup, our managers are the best in the world. Our players are talented. What is the missing link?

Winning the World Cup brings prestige but unfortunately doesn't solve a league's structural problems, as we've bitterly learned in Brasil. And some of the best Italian managers - Ancelotti, Capello, Lippi, even Trapattoni - aren't even working in Italian clubs.

Inter have no excuse, really. Milan, Fiorentina and to a certain extent Juve.. All have reasons of not doing as well as they should.

Home come Milan shouldn't be doing well? They're second in the table. Juve should've progressed over Bayern.

Milan's squad is just terrible. Look at Milan's defense line-up today.
can't Milan be blamed for that? even when they had money they weren't rejuvenating their squad

inter is the only one that classifies under "tactical" reasons, tactics that work on Serie A

tactics has nothing to do with it, this year just like previous was simply the squads not being as good as the opponents, that's all...

I missed the posts in which someone blames the coefficient system but I think the situation of serie A is hardly so bad as the thread starter made it. Fiorentina were eliminated by the best German club thanks to away goals. Does it mean that serie A sucks in comparison to Bundesliga? If the two best English clubs eliminate our two best clubs is that such a desaster?

You are talking about Juve and Milan clubs, but the main reason why germany is gaining on italy is uefa cup (or europe league as it known now). Interestingly you are not mentioning that. Why are you talking about this season? The coeffs are counted by 4 or 5 year scale. Therefore another reason why italy is loosing is the result of calciopoli, Juventus not part of CL lowered the numbers(and i am not talking on result level, but the fact that teams like Lazio, Chievo took the coeffs down, besides resulting in harder groups).

Calciopoli surely affected the UEFA Coefficient. It's sufficient to look at the coefficients in the seasons just after Calciopoli when compared to the one of 2005/2006.

Roma, Lazio, Genoa.... all these clubs are also part of the problem, not only Juve Inter and BB.

This is not even a problem for this year, this is a problem since a long time. Italian teams do not do well in Europe for the past 20 years. Milan are an exception.

Since 1990 Italian clubs have won four Champions League trophies. Spain has won six. England has won only two. Nevertheless in the last 4 years English teams have made it to the final.

But this hides the most glaring problem, that Italian teams tend to fall off the wagon early.

In the UEFA Cup no Italian team has appeared since 2000.

It's no surprise we consider Coppa Italia a mickey mouse trophy, because every club is obsessed with league performances so much that anything else is secondary.

Yep, the game going on right now, their defence has Bonera, Janku and Abate FFS, and this their "rejuvenated" bench to get in as options:

Dida 36
Gattuso 32
Inzaghi 36
Seedorf 33
Zambrotta 33
Favalli 38
Beckham 34

Average: 34.5

Man U are playing in a VERY subdued way to conserve energy for next game, but even when playing in lower pacing tempo, their are still more mobile and dynamic then a hustling Milan. Says alot of whats the main difference is in the two sets of footie (besides money that is). And I dont only mean Milan, but just in general for Italia.

FYI, Not saying slow tempo footie = bad, Milan of few years ago showed you dont have to be that quick or dynamic to outplay and outskill, which did against an energetic Man U even back then. But flawed and declined in lots of ways, and in particular the mobility and tempo difference stands out alot.

P.S No not in the school of thought its suddenly doomsday for italian footie, too many are fickle with what they say from one week to another. But the above is pretty obvious stuff (and also why Viola did "well" in CL, have other issues, but above isnt one).

But this is also exaggerated. The finals have drawn full houses for the past couple of seasons, it's not that it's completely irrelevant.
The final of any event will always draw a good crowd. The real proof comes when you see a club saying their ambition is to win the cup, and they put effort into it.

You never see this happen anymore. It's an afterthought, like a filler for their trophy cabinet.

italian football is a joke..and untill theres a shakeup in internal politics and squad age and quality..it will continue to be a joke.

Personally I don't care that others downgrade it so much. All I know is when Roma won it their world champions said it was better than winning in Berlin, all I know is Samp and lazio would have killed for it last year.

Down with the snobs!

I think this is part of the problem. In the CL there are reasons, but the problems in this league is surely the fact that some clubs are not going all out for this, and it is affecting the coefficient. Maybe now with three teams, things can change?

There has been a shake up. There is also the reality the clubs do not have the financial clout or they can't spend like they once did.

Look no further than Lazio, who are a mere shell of their former self.
