Word has it that JVP has been banned from all football until a decision is reached on his punching of the ref. I fear we might lose this guy for good. It's too bad the players can't lose with some dignity. They acted like asses at Euro 2000 and the same thing happened here. I understand passion and the disappointment, as I felt it myself, but give me a f*cking break. The man is not a petulant two year-old, is he?

I don't know if Fifa can ban him for domestic games , but uefa and international games he will!
Maybe this means 4-4-2 for the season!
__________Jardel-Niculae:D ___________
???________Viana__P.Bento___Quaresma
R.Jorge_____Cruz___Beto_______Quiroga
______________Nelson_______________

If we sell Tello (linked to Arsenal) we should put alot of our efforts to getting a good left footed player!

Interesting line-up, but you are assuming we keep Viana and Jardel. I have a feeling both could be gone. We already lost Babb.

I think JVP can be banned period. FIFA banned MAradona from all football when he failed the drug test, no? I think UEFA would follow their lead.

If JVP is indeed out, then keeping Tello would become a higher priority. He's no JVP (as JVP has been awesome for us) but he has potential that Sporting haven't even bothered to tap.

Pinto indefinitely suspended

Portuguese forward Joao Pinto, ejected in a first-round World Cup match against South Korea, was indefinitely suspended Tuesday for hitting a referee. ADVERTISEMENT

FIFA's disciplinary committee said there were indications Pinto punched referee Angel Sanchez of Argentina in the stomach when shown a red card for tackling a South Korean player from behind last Friday. The Koreans won 1-0, eliminating Portugal from the tournament.

``The act of hitting a referee is considered to be a serious violation of the disciplinary code,'' FIFA said in a statement.

``Given the serious nature of the offense, the disciplinary committee has already requested for additional information.''

The committee can make a decision based on evidence available at the time and is not obliged to have a hearing with all parties involved, according to FIFA rules.

FIFA did not say when it would announce the exact number of games Pinto will miss.

Earlier Tuesday, FIFA spokesman Keith Cooper said ``There have been some video pictures which have been received from another camera -- which is not a television camera but working in the stadium for other purposes -- which has shed new light on the incident.''

Portuguese soccer officials in Lisbon denied Pinto punched the referee.

All the talks of Jardel and Viana have gone quiet so.
I say keep Viana , let him play CL and next season we sell him for twice the price that they wan't to sell him now!
Players who should be sold are:
Prates
Barbosa
Tonito
Hanuch
Diogo
and so on
Barbosa as a great servent as he was is just slowing down the development of potential stars!

I also say Viana should stick around for the next season, if not next two. He's only 19, afterall and stands to improve immensely if given playing time. He already has a starting role for a championship team who is about to give the CL another try. The CL will already be tougher without Babb and now JVP, so we need him.

As for Jardel, it's really a case of his ego. He thinks he should be dominating Spain or Italy with a big club. Perhaps, but he has a chance to lead SCP into the CL and be a hero. Without his goal scoring threat, I don't see us doing much next year. Nicu should be back and he's a great second forward, but he doesn't have that killer touch like the big arrogant sh*t named Jardel. :D

Sporting to sack Joao Pinto if Fifa impose ban

Monday 24th June 2002

Sporting president Dias da Cunha has admitted the club could fire disgraced Portugal star Joao Pinto if he is banned by Fifa for punching referee Angel Sanchez.

"In the case of a severe punishment, we would have to make a tough decision," he said.

Joao Pinto is under investigation by Fifa following the South Korea-Portugal game on June 14, when Sanchez cited him for assault.

The forward had just been dismissed for a late challenge, leaving his team-mates to fight for most of the match against the co-hosts with ten men. The task proved beyond them as Korea won 1-0 to dump Portugal out of the World Cup.

Da Cunha nonetheless vowed to defend Joao Pinto at his Fifa hearing. "We are with him in this public trial," he said. "Joao Pinto could be banned, but for now we have to back him. He has become the scapegoat of the nation's frustration.

"If he receives a long ban, the coach will have to inform me what he intends to happen, although Joao Pinto is no ordinary player, so the last word will be mine.

"I confess that I'm not ready to face this situation, but I recognise the club have responsibilities in all this. Discipline is fundamental. Joao Pinto will have to be punished, not for violent behaviour, but because he exceeded in his protests.

"We will wait calmly and peacefully for a decision. At least Fifa have shown they want some distance to judge by not basing their decision purely on the referee's report."

Joao Pinto May Be Sacked By Sporting

Joao Pinto may be forced to look for a new club (Allsport)
06/24/2002. Joao Pinto may be sacked by Sporting Lisbon if he is banned by Fifa for punching referee Angel Sanchez.

The incident occurred during Portugal's defeat to South Korea that saw them eliminated from the World Cup. Pinto was sent-off for a rash challenge and was then said to have assaulted Sanchez.

"If the punishment is severe, we would have to make a tough decision," said Sporting president Dias da Cunha.

"If the ban is long, the coach will have to inform me what he intends to happen. Joao Pinto is no ordinary player, though, so the last word will be mine."

Da Cunha says the club will defend Joao Pinto at his Fifa hearing.

Anybody know when the ruling comes down?
