Brazilian clubs Palmeiras, the holders, and Corinthians, the FIFA Club World champions, will face each other in the Copa Libertadores semi-final first leg on Tuesday.

In the other semi-final, America of Mexico will play Argentine giants Boca Juniors who eliminated their bitter Buenos Aires rivals River Plate in the quarter-finals.

Palmeiras, 2-0 up from the first leg, beat Atlas from Mexico 3-2 in Sao Paulo. Taddei’s 85th-minute header clinched victory on the night, after Zepeta and Briseno had cancelled out goals for the holders by Rogerio and Ramos.

Once again it was not easy for Corinthians, who reached their first semi-final by beating compatriots Atletico Mineiro 2-1 at home after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Belo Horizonte.

Although Corinthians led 2-0 after 20 minutes, with goals by Edilson and Ricardinho, they had their work cut out to hang on after Guilherme replied with a 67th-minute penalty.

Boca beat River 3-0 to overhaul the clausura championship leaders’ 2-1 first leg advantage. Marcelo Delgado put Boca ahead after 14 minutes and midfield inspiration Juan Riquelme gave them the lead on aggregate with a penalty shortly before half time.

When River coach Americo Gallego pulled off Pablo Aimar 15 minutes from time it looked as though he was throwing in the towel and saving his midfield general for the league battles ahead.

The highlight of the evening was the return of Boca striker Martin Palermo, who had been out for six months with a cruciate ligament injury after scoring his 100th goal. He started on the bench but came on after 30 minutes and netted Boca’s third in the closing minutes.

America overcame the altitude of La Paz with a 2-1 win over Bolivar to go through on a 4-1 aggregate. Jose Salgado and Jose Calderon scored for America; Ronaldo Garcia for Bolivar.

America are also used to altitude at home in Mexico City, although not as high as that of La Paz. There is also a smog hazard around the Azteca Stadium where they will play the semi-final first leg against Boca on Wednesday.

This game is gonna be more than a war!! :)
We're gonna go for revenge from last year's penalty injustices. We played much better tahn them shooting 32 balls in goal while they only shot 4 and won the game! :(
