Hans Krankl has insisted he would be unfazed by the prospect of facing a major European nation in qualifying for Portugal 2004.

"Bring on Italy and England – we would have nothing to lose against big boys like them," he said.

Krankl also claimed he was ready to drop the players who refused to travel to Israel for last year's crucial World Cup qualifier because of security fears.

"I won't talk to those who did not travel. I'm only interested in players who are committed to representing their country," he said.

Krankl, who scored 34 goals in 69 games for Austria, pipped former Internazionale coach Roy Hodgson to the national job after he was backed for the post by all ten Bundesliga clubs. "Becoming national coach is a dream come true," he said.

Because he said exactly the opposite things on some recent interviews.
